I had serious problems with my credit card overdraft after leaving USA 3 years ago (I am not American, live in Poland and UK - depends). The problem was not related to the lack of money but closure of my account. I had an account at Wells Fargo - after leaving USA I suppose to send them about $550 but unfortunately after some time without money transfer they closed my account. I sent them official letter asking for some details to let me pay my card - no answer, I called the bank I opend my account at - they told me account was closed because I left USA but they do not see anything to pay... I had no idea how I suppose to find the company owning my debt (for sure it was sold or transfered) until I got information from Experian that the debt was sold somewhere. On the Experian report there is an information that my credit history is "excellent" with comment that my "last credit was sold". How I suppose to pay it right now? Wells Fargo employees do not see any problem, they do not worry about it... I do not have any papers from collectors because as I mentioned I left USA 3 years ago??? Do you know any solution, how I should take care of this case. I do not really care about my credit history in USA - I just want to have my credit finally paid.
Your credit reports should include information for who owns the debt now. If it was sold by WF to a CA and you just want to pay off your debt and be done with it, then all you need to do is call the CA and arrange payment. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to take your money. Have you pulled your reports to see if the collection is listed?
Thank you for the reply - I double checked the Experian report, there is only information that it was sold / transferred to another office. At Wells Fargo I was informed that they do not see any problems related to my closed account and the credit... In this case I'm just curious if I could have any problems when coming to USA (at passport check for example). Moreover, do you have something like "statute of limitation" in case of credit card debts? I really want to pay the debt but nobody is able to provide me specific information.
No, I doubt you would ever have any problems with a passport check. And yes, we do have SOLs here for credit card debts. They vary from state to state.
