Should I open this can-o-worms?

Hi, all this is my first post. Iâ??ve read a lot of the threads, but Iâ??m still unsure what I should do. I do not anticipate any large purchases for the foreseeable future. My Credit Karma score is 610. The SOL of these debts has expired. Should I even mess with this, or wait out the 29 months?

    Welcome to the Forum!

OK, so it looks like most of these are set to fall off semi-soon as you note. I understand you're not going to be making any big purchases (and consequently probably not applying for any loans), which makes disputing these one by one less urgent. But I did want to speak to at least one other way in which a fair-to-poor credit score can impact you.

First, many employers check your credit. I've had at least one friend have an offer rescinded because of his bad credit history and score (which I believe was sub-600). If you're gainfully employed, that's of course awesome. But if you're looking for a job, it's worthwhile to get familiar w/ your credit and to take action to improve it.

That said, the last thing you want to do right now is to wake up some of these sleeping beasts and accidentally reset the SOL. If you're interested in getting the smaller ones off your report quickly, I might suggest a pay-for-deletion letter. But otherwise if you're not looking for a loan or a job, it might be in your best interest to look away and keep walking...

If the SOL "accidentally" resets....you can "accidentally" sue them for violating the FCRA. ;)

My advice is to continue doing nothing, not communicating with the creditors or their collection agencies, and not paying anything toward the debts. By the end of 2015, all these alleged debts must, by law, "fall off" of your credit report.

I would, however, check the website of your county court each week to make sure that no one has filed a lawsuit against you. Some unscrupulous collection law firms are known to perform "sewer service", or in other words serve you at an address where they know you don't live, so you won't answer the lawsuit, and thus they will win a default judgment. Yes, I know that the debts are past SOL, and yes I know that creditors are not supposed to sue after the SOL, but if they do, then you must answer the lawsuit and raise the affirmative defense of SOL in your answer.

    Thanks, you guys rock.

Jason, I was thinking to just let them expire.

Mindcrime, great idea I've found a credit atty, just in case.

BCohen2010, I really didn't think of this. Midland attempted 5/2012. It was dismissed due to lack of service. I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Again thank you very much for the information and ideas.
