I mailed a validation letter to Assett Acceptance Corporation for an old Target account I had opened for my wife when married - she was supposed to pay this when we divoced as she received a substantial divorce settlement - the account was solely in my name as she had no credit or employment.

I received a reply from AAC with not only a copy of the application, but a copy of every statement from inception of the account to charge off.

The total debt is around 550.00 and I would like to pay this but need some tips on negotiating for a lower amount and total deletion.

I hate to ask this but did you use the same signature on the letter that you used for the application?

    Sorry, I hit submit.

I would not pay it without them deleting it. That's just me. They already messed your credit report. Paying it doesn't change the fact it was delinquent and is very close to having an unpaid.

As long as it is unpaid and you hold the money they want, then you have the power.

I would try to pay less than the full amount.

Personally I would call them and offer them a settlement of half off ($225.) in exchange for the item to be placed to positive status or removed from your file completely. If they agree tell them you will mail them a contract to sign, if they don't sign the contract they don't get paid. AAC can be nice if you are nice to them. I had an 'account' with them and I didn't get anywhere when I was screaming and yelling but they were willing to work when I was nice. All they want is money all you want is this off your CR.

How can any collection account be listed as a positive status?

have it changed to closed/never late. I didn't see the 'collection' part. I've had a few charge offs that have remained with the originale creditor ( or the collection agency never reported it on their own).
