I am close to reaching $5000 credit line between two of my capital one accounts and I am planning on combining and upgrading to platinum. One is a visa gold and the other is a classic mastercard. The classic mastercard is over three years old and I would like to upgrade that to platinum by combining my gold visa. My question is this, does the classic mastercard have to be upgraded to gold before it can be converted to platinum or is the platinum upgrade just a matter of reaching the 5000 limit?

A regular MC (or Visa) would not have to be upgraded first to gold before upgrading to Platinum. I had a secured Visa, sent off a letter PFB, and got it upgraded to Gold, unsecured of course. Totally bypassed "classic". Send a ltr off thru PFB, Mr. Cooke will get it, you should have no problem asking him to combine and upgrade, just make sure no lates and no overlimits within past 6 months.

ask to keep the older tradeline. better for your scores.

if you ask now, they'll combine you and take you to 5k even if you're a little short.

try to get better terms too: interest rate, no annual fee.

Thank you all for the feedback. I would have reached the 5k already but the kmart mastercard I have is not combinable so I have to wait 6 months for more credit line increases and to combine the visa gold and mastercard and upgrade to platinum. My kmart mastercard has very good terms thank's to Mr Cooke, 12.9% fixed, $1200 credit line and no annual fee.
