A CA just validated that a debt is mine and sent print outs, its an old medical bill for $1454. With the proof they sent a letter saying my balance is $1900.
Now that I know that the debt is mine, what should I do? I am not paying them the extra $500 dollars they tacked on.

Would I be better off to send a settlement offer to the original creditor or the CA?

    Thanks for any help!

Did they send "adequate" validation is the key question?

As Christi said, is it valid proof. Did what they sent you contain anything with your signature? Or, was it just a computer printout of what they claim you owe? If no signature was sent, they did not properly validate the debt.

All I received was a computer print out. There was no signature.

Find the FTC staff opinion letter from "Wollman" (I believe not positive) In that letter he states that a computer printout is NOT validation. Print that letter and send it with the estoppel, or just send the estoppel.

I agree, a print out does not provide validation. I could make a print out at home that says you owe me 1900.00. Because this is medical ask that they provide you with your signature on something stating that you agreed to pay them for services you DO NOT remember ever receiving.

Disregard the smart alecks, alee, they probably don't mean to make fun of you, and if they do mean to, they're the ones with issues, not you.

You are in the right place, feel free to ask anything.
