I have a single problem on my file which is a Collection account from Southwestern Bell dating to 3/1999. The collection is handled by Risk Management Alernates. It is reported only on my Experian file. It is unpaid. The charges are about $700. I am planning to get a mortgage around summer time. Based on what I see here, having an unpaid collection is bad when applying for a loan. I have never been contacted by the CA. So, what would be the best way to get it off my file? Should I start by just disputing it from the file? or should I start by sending a letter to the CA offering to settle for deletion? Is it possible that if I dispute it from the file, the CA may turn around and get a judgement to keep it listed past the SOL. The account dates to 3/99, was reported and last updated in the file in 6/2000. I am in Texas and the SOL here is 4 years. Thanks a lot
i would dispute it with the cra's first. if it is verified, i would try for validation... i doutb they will come after you for judgment for $700.00. if the are unable to validate, estopple and then letter to cra's for deletion. if it gets close to your deadline, i would try payment for deletion. DO NOT EVER MENTION YOU ARE BUYING A HOUSE GET PAYMENT FOR DELETION IN WRITING sorry to shout, but you will have no room for negotiation if they know you are buying a house. it doesn't help you if you pay it without getting it in writing. preferably with a copy of the UDF.
Thanks for the replies. The only thing that makes me reluctant to dispute the account right now is what I see from some of the posts here regarding RMA putting an inquiry every month or so.. In my case, they never pulled my file. I have never heard from them either.. So my thinking is that by diputing the inquiry I may get them to start looking at my file frequently My score with that CA tradeline is 690.. I don't know what my chance are for getting a loan without doing anything to the unpaid collection.
Bump ;-) I feel more oriented to try to contact the CA and offer them to pay for deletion. With such a request, how much would it be reasonable to settle for? The listed debt is $700, would an offer for 50% condiional on deleting the tradeline be reasonable? As I said before, I have not disputed the account with Experian since I didn't want to trigger a dormant debt. The account dates back to 3/99 and was reported and last updated on 6/2000. The CA has never contacted me or pulled my file. Thanks
