One of my towns store is. I'm surprised more around me aren't closing. I have about 6 within a 20 mile or so radius.
I'm in Waterloo, and ours is still open. It surprised me somewhat, because the store is rarely busy compared to Supertarget or Wal-Mart Supercenter.
I saw something last week on a business website that was interesting. They say don't count on any massive "blue light" specials. These stores have something like $750 million in inventory. What is not shipped to othe Kmart stores will likely be placed with inventory liquidation firms for dispodal. I guess we can start checking at Biglots and The Dollar Store for Kmart stuff.
I used to live in Houghton Michigan and about 90 miles outside of Marquette Michigan which is kindof considered the (BIG CITY) of upper penisula Michigan. Anyway, I am not surprised that the Houghton one is closing but the mall which it is housed will now be hurting big time since KMart and Penney's made for it only two large Dept Stores total. Houghton has Walmart and Shopko too so KMart isn't such a big loss to them. Walmart gets most of the business since it opened in 1994. Marquette just finally got a Target last spring 2001 so I am sure they are fine parting with KMart. I just can't believe these two dumpy KMart's near me in KCMO aren't closing. They are dives and way over crowded with merchandise.
Melissia, I was in a Kmart a couple of weeks ago. It was a spur of the moment thing as I realized I needed a couple of items and there was the store. I had quit shopping there because of the condition of the stores near you mirrored the store I'm talking about. Well, I was quite surprised. The palce was clean-the floors freshly waxxed, stuff was displayed neatly and, a store manager was running around asking if customers needed help. I don't know if corp. HQ lit a fire under everyone or, this manager just decided he was going to do his best to save his store but, it was a completely different experience than when I had last shopped there. I'll definitely give that store another chance.
keepmine, they were kissing much ass in hopes to keep their store alive. If kmart would have had this KWALITEE years ago, perhaps they wouldn't be in this position.. I might have to check out the KMART KWALITEE once they start liquidating the stores. Should be some good deals..
They are closing the one in my town. I've only been to it once in 5 years, Walmart/Super Target/Sams are closer. But, that one experience with having trouble finding things, no help employees and slow checkout clerks would have kept me from going back to the K-Mart anyways. Just a pain in the butt, cuz' now the store will be vacant for months, and then some "Larrys Discount Widgets" will open its place, who doesn't have the capital to keep up the appearance of the location. So, it becomes an eye sore.
I just got a preapproval from Cap1 last week for the gold Kmart mc with 0%apr until October. Wonder if I should bother. It's the first offer cap1 has sent me since I got the gold visa last year. Was hoping for a preapproval for the no hassle card. Oh well.
At least 3 of the locations on that list are convenient to my home or work. I'll probably be hovering like a bargain buzzard for the next few months.
1 Kmart is right behind my apt. It's a shame. I go into Kmart because I don't feel like bothering with Wal-Mart (too many people, not enough parking). I guess they decided they couldn't compete with the new SuperWal-Mart and Sam's that's going up down the street. It doesn't surprise me though, the store is less than 10 years old and it looks about 50! I always have to wait inline forever because there's only 1-2 clerks available. The store is dingy and dark and the items are never in stock. I can never get any help!! I was going to put something on lay-away. I waited for 30 minutes for a clerk and no one ever came so I just bought the stuff. I tried to save the store by shopping there but they have too much work to do to make it profitable. They don't realize - good customer service is key!
I am fortunate - the super K-mart where I shop is clean and neat, always busy and has good service. There are things I buy at Walmart, and things I buy at K-mart. This particular one has got the best meat and produce in the area - and at the best prices! And my Mom has commissary priviledges! I have not, however, accepted the K-mart card offers I get after every shopping trip, LOL. Don't need no stinkin' $200 card!
