I can vouch for radiohead's statement...since I called them today to do the same thing (combo Kmart with current Gold card). They will allow me to combo my Gold with Platinum card though. I'm thinking about PFB'ing Eugene about the Kmart issue...wouldn't hurt to try...
I talked to Mr. Cooke a while back about combining the Kmart card and visa card but he told me the affinity cards (Kmart card) cannot be combined with other cards due to a contract with Kmart. I also found out that if you have a secured card and then it is later unsecured and you want to combine it with lets say a Platinum visa, you have to keep the card that was originaly secured open. I tried to combine a Platinum visa and a gold mastercard that was once secured and leave the Platinum visa card open and Mr. Cooke said that is not possible. Mr. Cooke said I would have to close out the Platinum visa and leave the gold mastercard open. He also stated that secured cards can never be upgraded to Platinum status even if they are later unsecured. Gold is the highest upgrade for secured cards that are later unsecured even if your limit is currently over 5K according to Mr. Cooke. I think there is one exception to these rules and that is from the Capital One Marketing Department. I have a Capital One visa that was upgraded to gold by the marketing dept. and limit was $2600 I asked Mr. Cooke if he could upgrade to Platinum and he said no. He said it was a matter of reaching 5K and then he could upgrade my account. A week later I get a Platinum upgrade on my account plus a credit line increase from the Marketing Dept. at Capital One and my limit is still under 5K.
Hi Jr - you and I had about the same experience. At one point, a REP identified" one of the combining cards as an original secured then unsecured card - and because it was a different arrangement, it could never make Platinum status. Mr. Cooke had no problems combining all but the KMart. n He apologized fopr the rudeness and FEDEXed me the Platinum card - still to date the BEST EXPERIENCE I have had with a card company. best - dogman
Hey Dogman !!!! I agree with you about the great experience with Capital One. I started out subprime with them over four years ago and now I am prime with Capital One. I currently have the Platinum visa, Gold mastercard and the Kmart mastercard. Best credit card company to rebuild your credit with !!!! At first you start out with the $200 Toy Cards but if you are patient it gets way better. I almost made the mistake of closing out my Capital One visa card that started at $200 credit limit and now that same card is almost 3K credit line and is a Platinum Visa card low a.p.r.
Hi Jr - you are right - an almost identical path to prime! But Capital One does well with great customers too - and they aren't stupid - financially either LOL! They hold their customers. I remember that first $500 card I almost dumped. Hell - Some company called Providian had given me $1K VISA!!! ..... aarrff - dogman
Speaking of Providian, they need to stop screwing customers with the horrific 29% APR they are slapping customers with. Even the good customers are being screwed from left to right. The executives currently running Providian are from Fleet credit card who are notorious for raising peoples interest rates out of the blue.
