Asking for a CL increase with Amex

Just got my Amex Starwood card about 6 weeks ago and I'd like to ask for a CL increase. Does anyone know if they will pull another CR if I ask for the increase? If not, how do they determine what they'll give me?

One more thing while I'm at. Anyone know if Amex is keeping the BVG on the Starwood card? I know they're dropping it on Blue's, but haven't heard anything about Starwoods.

    Thanks,
    K

If the card is 30 days or younger you can contact retention and ask for an increase. After 30 days they will probably require you to wait 6 months.

FYI: At the six months interval, contact CSR and have them transfer you to Centurion Bank. They will give you an increase then and there, with no inquiry (they base it off your history with them). If you go through the online site, it's a hard inquiry each time. Learned that the hard way. :(

Initial limit was 6k. Just happened to be the exact same limit as the only other card I have on my report (MBNA - 6k).

I don't think I'm going to ask for the increase if it requires another hard inquiry, so once I find out if that's the case or not I'll make a decision.

Ok. Looks like I'm going to have to wait for a few months then.

Did they warn you beforehand that they were about to do a hard inquiry to check on your CL increase request?

Kevin, do you mean the online site? No. It doesn't let you know. I found out after I pulled my Equifax report.

Centurion Bank has never pulled my report when I spoke to them over the phone.

Yeah, I meant the online site. That's terrible that they don't let you know. Thanks for the heads up. It's saved me some unnecessary inquires.

As far as I know Kevin - if you wait the six months - you can press the "request credit increase" on their site - it will tell you if you're pre-approved for an increase and what amount - and if you accept - that doesn't get you a hard inquiry.
If you're not preapproved - they ask you to fill out a form - and that does require a hard inquriy.
In any case - as far as my experience has been - if you want an increase before 6 months - they do pull an inquiry - however - it's not always hard.
I asked for a reconsideration on my Delta card after two months - however I requested not to pull a hard inquiry.
A few days later they more than doubled my cl - and they pulled a SOFT account review inquiry on Experian.

I think the online site is buggy when it comes to increases.

Better to go with advice on this board and talk to a live rep at MORE.

    MORE?

What is MORE and how does it differ from regular CS?

    Hey Mandy--

I've always wanted to ask that question myself.

    Is MORE different than Retention?

    Who has the most power?

    Re: MORE?

MORE and MCS (Retention) have nothing in common.

The MORE team (part of the New Accounts dept.), can transfer some of your credit line from one Amex card to another, or from an existing card to a card you applied for, thus approving the application.

MCS is Amex's retention dept. They can switch a cardmember from one card to another. Also, if you have the Optima Platinum with an high APR, they can switch it to an Optima Platinum fixed 9.99% or variable P+4%. This can also be done by Customer Service reps, and I suggest that you only contact MCS if Customer Service wouldn't budge.

If you're calling to cancel one of Amex's charge cards, MCS can also offer MR points to keep your business, or issue a one-time annual fee waiver.

    Thanks Saar--

Is MORE the department you want to speak to first regarding a cl increase or should you call customer
    service and then call MORE?

(and what DOES it stand for?)

Glad you know so much about amex. I really appreciate all your answers.
