When I called the CA of my student loans today they said I verified the debt was mine by not reponding to a letter they say they sent in March. I don't remember seeing such a letter. They are now threatening to garnish my wages and say they have every right to. Is there a way to stop this and to validate the amount of the debt? I just started a new job and would be mortified if they were served with garnishment papers on me.
immediately send them a validation letter. if you just started a new job i doubt they could garnish you that quickly. call dept of ed and find out the exact status of your loans also. also, are you sure you didn't have any deferment or forbearance options? check into this also.
I remember reading this, and I'm glad I could find it quickly. Check this link: http://ifap.ed.gov/regcomps/attachments/682.pdf Scroll to page 13-101, and read section (G). It says, "The guaranty agency may not garnish the wages of a borrower whom it knows has been involuntarily separated from employment until the borrower has been reemployed continuously for at least 12 months." I hope that helps. Also, don't be too mortified about your employer "finding out." They cannot discriminate against you because of it in any way, shape, or form.
