I do have a question. I have a friend who forgot to file her texes last year. She did, however file her taxes THIS year, but isn't sure how to go about filing last years taxes. What is the best way to find out about that - she generally gets a refund back, not owing anything else, but since she forgot last years, she doesn't know the best way to "fix" it. Should she just file last years, exactly as she would this years?
Yes file last years taxes, you can get the forms and book online. She might get a penalty, but I doubt it.
Have your friend contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040. A representative there will be able to help and tell her what she needs to do. If she is to receive a refund, the IRS will withdraw the penalty and interest she owes and then send her the remainder. If the penalty and interest is over the amount of the refund they will send her a bill for the rest. Dani
I filed returns for the last four years recently. As it turned out, I was a due a refund for close to 3K. If you are entitled to a refund, there is no penalty. The IRS has a three SOL to file for a refund. But somehow, they gave me the refund for 1997, PLUS INTEREST!!!!!! I was really impressed. I just went to the IRS site and downloaded all the forms and mailed them off indvidually. It took about 8 weeks for all my returns to be processed.
I think that they give 12% interest if they owe you money. At least they did 4 or 5 years ago. Charlie
I DON'T THINK THERE CAN BE ANY PENALTIES ON A NON FILED REFUND FOR TAXES~~~NO TAXES DUE...JUST DIDN'T FILE FOR REFUND... Not an expert...but if there is a PENALTY...it doesn't sound right...
link is http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/ your friend can download the forms for last year, including the tax tables and instructions
tangey, Here is what your friend should do...go to this site: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf There she will find the forms for 2000...if she has no itemized deductions she looks for either 1040A or the 1040EZ....she can then download the forms. She might need the tax tables...they will also be listed for 2000. Then using her w-2s...do her taxes....if she owes nothing...then it is no problem...if she has a refund coming...the irs will send it to her as soon as the process it. If she owes something then she should just file it and wait for the irs to send her a bill. This is no big deal...but she should file as soon as she can. hope this helps. clc ps. the irs nevers pays interest on refunds unless they are at fault for delaying the payment of one.If the taxpayer is at fault then the irs has just lived off your money interest free.
tangyl, here are the exact urls to get the forms: 2000 1040A Form www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-00/f1040a.pdf 2000 1040A instructions www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-00/if1040a.pdf 2000 1040EZ www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-00/f1040ez.pdf 2000 1040EZ instructiona www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-00/if1040ez.pdf She must have adobe to download these...if she need a 2000 1040 because she has itemized deductions...just follow the logic... hope this helps. clc
What about a state tax? She's from Illinois - and recently moved to another state. But she was wondering how to handle the state tax. I would assume that she just downloads the Illinois form and fills that out??? In Texas, we don't have a state tax at all and I've never missed IRS forms because I always get a refund ... and WHO wants to not get that, right?
