My significant other tells me today that I should apply for this new "cool" looking credit card from Discover (clear, blue, I guess they're trying to imitate Amex).
I explain that Discover's terms are not that great (13.9% after initial 0% teaser rate and Two Cycles Average Daily Balance).
My significant other says - yeah - but it's a "cool" looking card...

    Whatsup with that?
I guess good marketing is everything.
In general - just thought i'd share here - I hate the word "cool."
    Am i getting old?

Six inch platform shoes are "cool" too, but that doesn't mean I wear them.

You have the right idea. If the card doesn't fit your needs there is no point is applying.

Tell her you saw a hooker wearing a clear plastic dress in the city, and that it would probably match the cool discover card ;)

In terms purely of aesthetics I think some other cool looking cards are the new Discover that you can put on the keychain, Amex Blue, Amex Platinum charge & Centurion, and Quantum. Quantum actually is an ugly looking card as it doesnt shine like the mbna plat plus, but personally I think it still is somewhat cool looking & a couple of sales assistance in London commented on how cool it looked.

I have the blue Discover, it is cool b/c nobody else has one...At least, I've never seen another one.

My favorite reward card (Barnes & Noble MBNA) is the least cool-looking card of them all, but I use like mad, just don't carry any balances.

I definately use the coolest looking card in my wallet if I'm at a restaurant. It's just not proper to whip out the 'ol Shell MasterCard to cover an evening at Benihana's, KWIM?

The absolute coolest is the Discover2go!

Mark -seriously, though - Discover has horrible "regular" terms, but I'm getting 0% on BT's and purchases through December ... that's the absolute best deal from any creditor I've gotten to date.

Sure, it ends, but then I'll xfer it or pay it off.

I think the Amex Blue looks better than Discover's bubble card -- for that matter, Citi's Illumina is pretty sharp too (with 0% on BTs, not bad terms either).

Tell your s/o that he or she can apply for all the cool cards he or she wants ... just use the ones that make sense to you!

The coolest I have are the Amex Blue and JCB standard. The card on the website (JCB) doesn't show the detail very well, but the entire card has a really cool design.

Wow, the JCB card --that is pretty exotic. Do you find that there many places you can use it here in the US or is it mostly for travel to Japan?

    Hi luxury4me,

JCB is trying to make a large footprint in the US. They are actually the 4th largest major credit card issuer in the world. They are more popular in Japan and other countries though.

I am starting to find more places accepting this card. I use the card for purchase at:

    Sears
    Earthlink
    Sprint Long Distance
    Kmart
    Amazon.com
    The Gap
    Chili's restaurants
    Nieman Marcus
    Mobil service stations
    Post Office
    Nordstrom's
    Many airlines and hotels

There are other places of course, these are just my most frequent. It's fun using a card that not many have seen. You get a lot of double takes. :-D

How does that go? The merchants that I edited out might recognize the card but I can only imagine what the people working my local stores listed above would think especially my KMart and the Post office. I guess at the gas station, I can run it through the pump.

And if you don't mind me asking what's your CL? Or is it like some Amex cards?

I think it really would be cool to have the JCB card. Even shopping at mundane places would suddenly allow you to look like a businessman frequently traveling to Japan. Cool!

I'm w/ you luxury4me! I really do think the JCB is cool. I am just trying sooo hard to remember that I don't need any more credit. I am almost glad that they don't offer an online application.

I don't have a "COOL" credit card yet. But if I did it would have a $100,000 CL, 1% rate for life, no OTL fees, no late fees, ect. As far as it's appearance, if it had a picture of a steaming pile of dog crap, and the aroma to match, that would be just fine and dandy with me. I'm not out to "impress" anyone with my cool looking cards, just trying to make life better for my family and myself. JMO

Good, I sincerely hope you and your family get the "dog crap" card that want. And you're certainly right, it wouldn't impress anyone.
