    star,

It's not a scam, but it is a rip-off...not really the same thing. It isn't associated with Chex Systems, either. If you want a pre-paid CC, just go to your local Rite-Aid and pick up one of their i-Gen Mastercards, or whatever they call it. I think it's only 9.95 to activate it, as opposed to 49.95+ for the Chex Card. About the only info on it that's accessible online is on Rite-Aid's weekly circular. Click here, then go down to the bottom of the circular's page.

    Hope that helps...

The AAA prepaid Visa cards are widely available as well--you can have any name printed on it. And you don't have to be a member. Although you have to wait for it to be mailed (1 week) you can have it sent to a PO Box. Recharges over $50 are $3, under $50 are now free. The card and statements are issued by MBNA.

The also have the Visa TravelMoney cards which are available for pickup at AAA. However, they only work as debit cards at any ATM on the Visa network.

The Chex Mastercard is a debit card. It is for people who do not want a paper trail to their spending habits. You can get one with no ID, and no SS#. They only want a nine digit number, and it can be any number. And, you can get it sent to a mail drop or PO Box. Yes, it is expensive.

It is ideal for someone who wants to hide assets from someone like creditors. They will allow you to make an automatic deposit of your paycheck, so it is good for those people who have no checking account. Helps them to avoid the check cashing services.

They also offer a Chex unbranded card (not Mastercard or Visa) for less money. It is used basically to get money out of ATMs where you would not have to have a name on the card. It is cheaper. It is an ATM card without a name imprinted on it.

I have no interest in this company but did a little research last month when a friend asked. I did check out the BBB and they have no complaints. I do not know what bank it comes from.

Of interest, I also checked out the AAA debit card and they never replied, nor was their web site or phone working. I was under the impression that they discontinued that product.

Jonesing: Do you have a link for the AAA card? Everything I see indicates they no longer provide that product.

I'm not ready yet to say it is a scam, BUT....

twenty nine days ago I sent them a check for six cards for employees so they could use them to pay expenses. I paid extra for expedited delivery and was promised 7 - 10 day delivery. They got the package 26 days ago.

Their customer service has dozens of excuses as to why the cards have not arrived. As of this morning, they are claiming they were shipped Friday. Five days already for expedited service? Even the USPS isn't that slow.

I did check them out ahead of time and there were no complaints with the BBB. Also, they are not affiliated with Chex Systems.

I will keep you posted. For the time being, keep your money in your pocket.
