    by the politicians--

    Front page article of today's Wall Street Journal has the political campaign contributions through 9/9/02 for some companies we all know--

    MBNA 4.7 million
    Amex 1.3 million
    Sallie Mae 1.1 million
    Household 1.1 million
    Visa .6 million

    It is no wonder that many times the rules legislated are pro business. Who is really behind whom here and how can a politician ignore this kind of campaign support? I bet this kind of money (and the constant lobbying) really buys a senator's ear.

    Exactly. Consumer Advocate groups can't compete when they have to go against that kind of money. Charlie

    Maybe not, but a petition with a thousand constituent's signatures on it would make a powerful statement. Trouble is, a lot of people will bitch about laws enacted, but never do anything to stop them.

    What do we need to do to get a something done about this problem? I will sign what ever it takes to get washington to wake up to what the companies are doing to the consumers.

    Anyone else old enough to remember "School House Rock"?

    I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill..........:

    }} {Woof! You sure gotta climb a lotta steps to get to this Capitol
    }} Building here in Washington! But I wonder who that sad little
    }} scrap of paper is?}

    I'm just a bill,
    Yes, I'm only a bill,
    And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
    Well, it's a long, long journey
    To the capital city,
    It's a long, long wait
    While I'm sitting in committee,
    But I know I'll be a law someday...
    At least I hope and pray that I will,
    But today I'm still just a bill.

    }} {Gee, bill, you certainly have a lot of patience and courage!}
    {Well I got *this* far. When I started, I wasn't even a *bill* - I
    was just an idea. Some folks back home decided they wanted a law
    passed, so they called their local congressman and he "You're right,
    there ought to be a law." Then he sat down and wrote me out and
    introduced me to Congress, and I became a bill. And I'll remain a
    bill until they decide to make me a law.}

    I'm just a bill,
    Yes I'm only a bill,
    And I got as far as Capitol Hill.
    Well now I'm stuck in committee
    And I sit here and wait
    While a few key congressmen
    Discuss and debate
    Whether they should
    Let me be a law...
    Oh how I hope and pray that they will,
    But today I am still just a bill.

    }} {Listen to those congressmen arguing! Is all that discussion and
    }} debate about you?}
    {Yes. I'm one of the lucky ones. Most bills never even get this far.
    I hope they decide to report on me favourably, otherwise I may die.}
    }} {"Die?"}
    {Yeah: die in committee. Oooh! But it looks like I'm gonna live.
    Now I go to the House of Representatives and they vote on me.}
    }} {If they vote "yes", what happens?}
    {Then I go to the Senate and the whole thing starts all over again.}
    }} {Oh no!}
    {Oh yes!}

    I'm just a bill,
    Yes I'm only a bill,
    And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill,
    Well then I'm off to the White House
    Where I'll wait in a line
    With a lot of other bills
    For the President to sign.
    And if he signs me then I'll be a law...
    Oh, how I hope and pray that he will,
    But today I am still just a bill.

    }} {You mean even if the whole Congress says you should be a law, the
    }} President can still say no?}
    {Yes, that's called a "veto". If the President vetoes me, I have to
    go back to Congress, and they vote on me again, and by that time
    it's...}
    }} {By that time, it's very unlikely that you'll *become* a law! It's
    }} not easy to become a law, is it?}

    No! But how I hope and I pray that I will,
    But today I am still just a bill!

    }} {He signed you, bill! Now you're a law!}
    {Oh yes!}

    So true but that means getting a coordinated effort going and that's tough. Also, really following a politican's record and letting him/her know that you'll work for/against reelection based on this record (such as who took lots of money from Providian in NH.) Also being willing to testify before a congressional committee when hearings are being held on a pertinent issue and just general awareness of what goes on. For example, no one can seem to get a clear answer on the "lifetime" CR that applies for certain loan amts or jobs paying more than a certain amt. I suspect the CRAs send whatever they have on you b/c even though it may not be on your current CR, they KEEP all of they info that you've had deleted in their databases. Unfortunately, as we all know, some of this information is truly erroneous but I suspect it's sent under the "special circumstance" report anyway.
    Fighting this takes money and time and unfortunately Joe Consumer doesn't often have this luxury.

    Correct
    That's why there are all these problems discussed here on this board.

    As I've stated before`stop supporting the compaines with our money.
    That will get their attention quick and it won't matter about the politicians.

    That's why I won't do business w/ certain companies. For credit cards it's WFFNB, Providian, FCNB and Household among others. Doesn't matter what they offer, I don't agree w/ their practices so I won't have accts w/ them.
