Must be my week for phone calls. This one really took me by surprise.

I sent a fax to them a few weeks ago concerning Equifax' changing the status date and the balance date on a collection account, and the subsequent 40 point drop of his FICO score, when all else remained unchanged. I wanted to know if those two dates were included in the FICO score calculation, despite what Ms. Banks at Equifax said. I wanted it from the horse's mouth. Of course, being the pessimist that I am, I never expected to actually hear from them, other than maybe some form letter.

Sadly, he did say that only the date that the item was placed in collection is figured into the FICO score. He did agree, with everything else remaining the same, that it was odd that the score dropped as a result of those dates changing; he also agreed that it would appear very misleading on a credit report to see those dates as 10/02 rather than 6/96.

But he offered to take a look at the right-before and right-after reports to see if he could offer any other explanation as to why the score dropped the way it did. He was also very curious as to whether or not the negative item explanations included the recentness of collection or public record accounts (which it does.)

So I think, just to satisfy my own curiosity and to perhaps glean maybe even a tidbit of info re: FICO scoring, that I'll let him see the reports and get his feedback.

    :)

Can you please post or email me their fax number? I've submitted the form twice through their website with no response at all.

    Thanks!

I addressed it to Thomas Quinn, Director, Client Support. I am pretty sure I got his name and fax number off of Bayhouse.

The person who responded to me was Barry Paperno.

I also sent the letter to their e-mail but the fax is what got me a call back. It took about 3 weeks for a response, he said that it got bounced arounmd to several people before it got to his desk.
