I have been fighting with Capital One to give me good terms since I got the card 2 and a half years ago. I could never get a credit line increase unless I called the Executive Offices and complained. I combined two cards this summer and they counted that as a credit line increase and wouldn't give me another in December. I emailed the EO through Planetfeedback twice in December, never received a response. Finally called in and spoke to Joe, he told me to call back on the 6th and there should be no problem getting an increase. He was gone when I called in today and I don't know who I got, but she was a total sow. Denied my credit line increase because I went a $1.29 over on my last statement. Said she would do nothing for me. I was so hot I told her to close out my account right then, she said fine and hung up on me.

This is sad, I have had the card almost 3 years, I owe them $2500 bucks, been over the limit twice this year, once with the $1.29 and another with one of those stupid promotions they run and I forgot I agreed to be sent information on it, they charged me and put me way over. I got that straightened out, but guess that wasn't good enough. They really don't care over there and I was suprised at how this turned out. I won't give in and re-open it, I'm going to pay them off with my tax return and they can stick that card where the sun don't shine.

I've been very unhappy with Cap 1 myself... I do have to thank them though for being the first company to give me an unsecured card a few years ago when I started getting back on track....

I have also cancelled all but one of the Cap 1 cards....for similar reasons...ie....pay for credit increase .....and high rates....etc...

    Good Luck!

Sorry you didn't get what you wanted, but I don't know of any credit card company that will give you an increase or better terms if you go over your limit. Going over your limit is a big no-no to credit card companies.

Sorry about your bad experience with Capital One.

I would constantly praise Capital One when I first got here, but as I got more irritated at their practices (not reporting limits, LOW credit limit increases, long periods between increases), I quit being such a cheerleader for them.

I am so glad I found this board and was able to increase my score and get better cards.
They hold a special place in my heart, and in my sock drawer.

I like Dogman's posts about Capital One, because his posts make me see that somewhere underneath their 'bad business practices', they CAN be a good company.

I hope everything works out for you.

When you combined the 2 cards, were you able to keep the oldest tradeline? Also were you able to remove the tradeline of the one you no longer have, or do you still have both on your CR?

I have actually combined two other small cards into my big and oldest card with them, the two small ones report as paid as agreed and closed.

I have gone over in the past a buck or two, paid my $29 fee and went on with it, hasn't stopped me from getting a credit line increase in the past. Yes, I am sooooo bad for going over that $1.29, just for that I don't deserve a credit line increase and they would rather me close my card. The point is, Joe promised me one thing but I didn't even come close to getting it. Why should one rep be able to do that, but another totally override it and say no? And be rude about it? Her attitude was pissy from the moment she answered the phone.

JOIN THE CLUB...wife combined 2 accounts and they CALLED THAT A LIMIT INCREASE!!!

MR COOKE said he can't OVER-RIDE the decision...

WHAT A JOKE COMPANY...THEY REFUSE TO INCREASE THE LIMIT BECAUSE YOU COMBINE 2 ACCOUNTS AND REFUSE TO STATE THE CREDIT LIMIT BECAUSE THEY THINK HIGH CREDIT IS THE SAME THING AS CREDIT LIMIT!!!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Cap One. My experience with them has been a bit different, but I can definitely relate to how you must be feeling because I had a really bad experience with an auto finance company a number of years ago that still makes me shudder sometimes!

Anyway, several years ago when I filed a chapter 7 BK, Capital One was one of the few banks willing to issue a secured card to me once my debts were discharged ($300 deposit with a $1,000 credit line). After a year of using that card, they converted it to a gold card with a $5,000 limit unsecured. Then, a year after that they converted the gold to a plat card with an $8,000 limit (9.9% apr...sorta high but not bad for 4 years post-BK).

If your scores are halfway decent, I would just pay off Cap One and find a new card with a bank that treats you better (and always stay under your credit limit no matter what you do)! Good luck :)

Yep, and that is pretty much the bottom line here. Get close to your limit, or over, and credit-card companies start being very unfriendly, ungracious, and taketh away what you worked so hard to get. They are real nervous about cardholders that go over the limit (yes, even if their finance charge, or late charge put you there).

I pfb'd Cap one when they charged me an OTL fee and I made a payment the next day. I was over like $3.00. They refunded me the $25.00 to my account! That is what I would try if I were you!

I understand that some of you appreciate that Cap One took a chance on you when your credit was less than stellar but, The policy changes that have been implemented at this company make it seem as though they are really trying to push customers away. The credit line that you are initially issued will most likely stay the same for quite sometime, except for a few people on this board that have gotten larger increases.

It comes down to a personal deciscion, if you are happy with low credit limits, less than knowledgeable CS, very "tiny" credit increases. then it's good for you. I will not do business with this company.

samc - of course, you COULD call back J tomorrow, and come on sad, and frustrated..and then tell him how things did not go well on a call yesterday - and boom, I closed an account I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP due to DISAPPOINTING CUST SERVICE...

Could you help get our agreement and card fixed?
I bet he would do it...but,,,it is another phone call - one that could ONLY HAVE POSITIVE RESULTS!?!

The "disappointed" customer calling back for help, in mostr situations, will get manual stuff done.
It brings it to people helping people.

I have mixed feelings with cap1 as well... I've had my acct since 2k and in all that time the only things I've gotten accomplished was my cc limit from 200 to a whopping 350, and my card unsecured (only by Mr. Cooke's intervention) Also my APR was lowered to 15.9. I can't win with them. I laugh because they send my wife offers 2 x a month for 2k with 39 fee, when her scores in the mid to high 700's and has never made a late payment (unlike me)

But, they were the first card I was able to get along with Orchard Bank (570 limit after 2 years no lates) so I guess I can't complain too much.

I only got the $72.00 FEE "GOLD" invitations...

I did a PFB to MR COOKE and gave him some history on the phone when he called, and a couple of months later..."PRE-APPROVED" UP-TO $7,500 (got $7,500)...I ALSO GOT $2,000 MORE 6 or 7 months later...then I got my interest lowered to 5.90% FIXED!!!

    THE COMPANY IS SO CONFUSING!!!

George, what kind of history could you have given Cooke that would get you Plat. offers a few months later? I don't think Cooke affects the marketing of card offers to potential customers, or does he?. Congrats on the 5.9F, my wife can go no lower than 9.9F and she is in the 700 club too. What gives?

I can't say for a FACT that he got it for me...it could have just been "LUCK OF THE DRAW"

    24+ YEARS PERFECT CREDIT HISTORY

HAD NO FEES ON ANY CARDS

H/H INCOME (NOT EVEN ASKED ON "PRE-APPROVED" FORM)

    F.I.C.O. 685-739

INFERRED I KNOW A "TON" ABOUT CREDIT CARDS AND DIFFERENT COMPANIES AND HOW THEY TREAT CUSTOMERS

I DIDN'T "REAM" HIM ABOUT THE CREDIT LIMIT AND CRA'S TILL AFTER I HAD THE ACCOUNT

I WAS INSULTED GETTING A "GOLD" OFFER WITH LIKE 19.80% AND A FEE OF $72.00 AND A LIMIT OF LIKE "UP-TO" $3,500...I HAD ONE CARD AT $5,000 AND EVERYTHING ELSE WAS $10,000+++

ASK FOR 5.90% OR 7.90% MY "BUDDY AND HIS WIFE HAVE"~~PFB WORKS...COULDN'T HURT!!!

...but then CITIBANK, AMEX, MBNA, CHASE all hate me for LIMIT INCREASES!!!

George, I think that answers my questions rather authoratatively. 24 years history puts you in a unique position to bargain, much more so than I.
