Some of their banks in VA are leaving due to merge of 1st Union and Wach thats causing too many banks to be open.

Wachovia Corp. is shutting 20 Wachovia and First Union banking offices throughout Hampton Roads over the next three months, including eight of its branches inside Farm Fresh supermarkets that will close in two weeks.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based banking giant will eliminate the dozen other branches throughout Hampton Roads in late July, as it shutters 42 Virginia locations in a push to consolidate overlapping banking operations that resulted from Wachovia's April 2001 merger with First Union Corp.

The names of all First Union branches will be changed to Wachovia after the mid-summer change that also includes the elimination of nine offices in northern Virginia, eight in the Richmond area and five in western Virginia.

"It didn't matter whether the branch was a Wachovia or a First Union," said Wachovia spokesperson Sarah Holden. "It mattered where it was and how big it was."

The changeover looks to be relatively painless for many residents because most of the banks the company plans to close are small branches. And in most cases, there is a surviving office within a half-mile, Holden said.

Customers losing their branch recently received a letter with directions to the closest office and a list of other nearby locations.

Robert Sourwine has been using the Wachovia bank inside Farm Fresh off of Chatham Drive in Newport News since it opened about 4 years ago. The Newport News resident said the proliferation of bank branches in recent years means he won't be affected much by the demise of the branch inside the grocer. Wachovia notified Sourwine that it plans to keep its ATMs in the supermarkets.

"The only thing that really disturbed me was the woman who served me has moved over to Portsmouth," Sourwine said. "She knew my name and my account numbers and even my credit card number, so that made it a lot easier."

The switch will not result in any job losses. "All frontline financial center employees in good standing will be offered a position at another location," a company news release said.

The Mid-Atlantic region will be the last market to switch all First Union offices to the Wachovia system and brand name. Florida and Georgia locations have been converted, and North Carolina and South Carolina will change in May. Because only First Union has branches north of Virginia, those offices will not be changed.

The Hampton Roads branches to be closed are in Chesapeake, Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

Is this going to affect Wachovia's issuing of credit cards until it's over? Any ideas?

    Re: Wachovia issued by MBNA

Sorry I just noticed that that last message posted twice. Wanted to add that after some nosing around on wach. website I saw that MBNA issues Wachovias cards.

I'm not sure about MBNA, but my Wachovia Platinum card (can't remember if Visa or MC and too lazy to look) is actually a First USA card. It still SAYS Wachovia but lists as First USA on the Credit reports and according to the correspondence they sent me. It switched ... maybe 2 years ago.

    Just FYI.

Wachovia currently uses MBNA as the issuer of their Wachovia credit card. If you had a Wachovia card prior to June 2001, then those accounts belong to First USA-now Bank One card services. I am not sure if all card accounts were bought out by Bank One in June of 2001, so maybe by some chance MBNA got their hands on some of those accounts. Just a little FYI.

I've had my card for quite a while and mine did not switch to Bank 1 so I guess that these cards are spread out between First USA, Bank 1 and MBNA. Sheesh.

First USA is owned by Bank One(same company), so your issuer is probably either card services(Bank One) or MBNA, as Wachovia used to issue their own cards but they had problems with dipute resolution etc, so the portfolio was purchased in 2001 by First USA and FUSA still used the Wachovia name on all correspondence, envelopes, billing statements, and letter heads come under the name Wachovia. I am not sure if this will be effected by the change of name on alot of the First USA products if so the card might end up Bank One or maybe they will keep the Wachovia moniker on there I am not sure as soem things changed and others haven't yet. Guess it just depends on your card issuer.

It's all so incestuous isn't it? Thanks for the info, I had no idea Bank 1 and First USA were one and the same. In my more paranoid moments, I suspect that that if you boiled away all the 'subsidiaries' and 'partners' there's really only 1 very large, very rich finance company.
