    Department Store Cards

I had a Mervryns charge card when I was in college back then. It became a charge off, never paid for it. I ran my credit reports and I think it fell off after 7 years. Since Target and Mervyns are funded by the same bank. Do you guys think it would be wise to apply for a Target store card. I hear it's easy to get approved in-store, as long as you have a major credit card. But, do would thing I would get denied because I defaulted on the Mervryns charge card way back when. I just don't want to waste an inquiry if there is no chance.

Also, if unpaid charge-offs are off ones CR, do you recommend if re-applying 7 years after? or same questions, but with diffirent companies being financed under the same bank?

id say no..I have an 8 year old mervyns charge off..I applied for target because I knew mervyns cant put it on my CR legally...sure enough I got a letter in the mail a few weeks later telling me I was declined due to oweing on that mervyns account.
this was like 2 months ago. im in texas.

same thing for old navy..I guess they are the same bank?

as for the second question, it depends on the bank :) some have good memories and are vindictive..others are not. there are threads you can search for 'blacklist' is probably the keyword you want to search for.

    hey mark,

did you apply in the store or online. i hear everyone pretty much gets instant approval as long as you have a credit card when you apply in the store???

I had a Target card before my Mervyn's card charged-off. So I applied online 7/02 for the Target Visa, was denied due to the prior Mervyn's chargeoff.

Lady-You have an outstanding balance with Mervyn's would you like me to connect you to that dept. to get it taken care of?

    Me-No thanks, I'll call back.

Then in Oct '02 (I think) I got an offer to close my Target for the TargetVisa. The initial line was $2k but I closed it 2 months later when they wouldn't lower the interest rate 18.9%.

If you do apply online and you don't get approved right away. They may offer for you to payoff the chargeoff and then you can get the card.

How much was the chargeoff? Depending on the amount and if you need the card bad enough you could do that...

I think my Mervyns chargeoff was about $600.00. I cant recall, because its off my CR. I'm very hestitant about applying online. I was just curious about their in-store instant approval process for their Target Guest Card. I guess my question is has anyone every been denied a Target guest card when applying instore, even when you provide them a cc reference on the spot. If I understand their instant credit procedure, you must provide your DL and a major cc card to be eligible for instant approval?

My first time applying for the Target Guest card was in-store. Supplied my driver's license and a credit card, and was still given the usual "no soup for you" response.
