Thanks. I've been thinking more and more of applying for that card. I'd probably get turned down too, but getting that card would be great.

Balance transfers at 1.9%, or even 2.9%, would be the ideal way to get rid of my subprime balances forever.

    11.5k with a 658!

Everyone knows that I recently applied and received a 5k CL on a Citi Platinum.
Upon reading this message from George, I called Citi to see if I could get that great balance transfer (1.9 till '02) since my account is only a week or two old. They told me they would have to do some paperwork and I would know in a week or two.
Well....my husband has a 658 and several more negatives than I do and was turned down last month for a CL increase on his classic Citi card.
I applied for his Citi Plat a few minutes ago--got 4500! THEN they offered a BT (to vendor or consumer) of up to 11500.
They will be sending my a check for 10k next week and his total credit line is 11,500.
Thanks for the heads up GEORGE!!! You the man!

Yet another proof that the best way to get an increase w/ Citi (and others) is to apply for a 2nd card and then combine limits.

    Just Curious, George

Do you have any other Citibank accounts, George? I noticed you used their accountonline address.

I have two Citibank accounts already, Classic and ClickCiti. I figure my good performance there could help me get a third card. But if you already have Citibank accounts, then there goes my theory...

I didn't say you did. I said that has proven to be the best way to get an increase, if you otherwise can't get one.

    When were you declined?

    George

I got this card in Feb 2001 with a 591 score. 3500 limit with 2300 transfered @ 2.9%. Called the day I received the card in the mail and had the APR reduced to 16.49% before I even used it once. When I was approved I had 3 paid charged offs from 1998 on all three of my reports. Trust me I was shocked as hell when I saw that approval screen.

Ah, the way I read it, I felt it was implied and I didn't want any confusion :)
But then again I've got the adrenaline thing still kinda going over the shock factor.

    Re: Combining Limits

I was just thinking, Saar. If the goal is to get more credit, then what is the purpose of combining limits? You have the same amount of credit before and after combining limits.

I can think of two reasons: avoiding another annual fee and avoiding another open account. I'm interested in your opinion about this.

I think Saar's point was that some have a better chance of getting an additional card with a high limit and then combining then they do getting increases from Citibank.

Before you combine, you have nothing to combine it with. Say Citi declined your CL increase application. It would still many times approve you for a second card. Just use the second card as a limit increase for the first, by combining. Applying for a 2nd card and then combining its limit w/ the 1st, is an indirect credit increase alternative. Also works w/ Amex: they won't increase CL unless it's been 6 months from previous increase. Bypass: You apply for a 2nd Amex CC and then combine it w/ the 1st, even if the 1st was just increased a minute ago.

    $9,000 CARD (1) + $9,000 CARD(2)...COMBINE = ONE CARD $18,000

You probably could not get a credit line increase on card (1) OF $9,000...

    Re: Combining Limits

I applied for Citibank Platinum Select back in 09/00 and was approved with a 7000.00 credit limit. I always paid back just above minimum in order to get a good repaying record with them. On 5th month (Feb.01), I applied for a credit limit increase and was denied for a "Low Repaying Balance." I was furious- I called them up(had a 4000.00 balance and immediately gave them my checking account number and told them to I was going to pay them off, which I did but for some reason I kept the account open (I started to read board around this time) and found out by board you have to at least wait six months.
So I started to read about combining limits and this is what I did. I applied for the clic citi platinum and was approved online for 6000.00--waited a day(on this card it gave me a account number and exp. date right away to use for online purchases) and I told them I made a mistake, that I did not know I could only use this card online --told them I wanted to combine my limit and close my clic citi card--immediately , my credit limit jumped to 13000.00. I waited 3 weeks, reapplied for a sony platinum card and was immediately approved for 8500.00-- I will wait awhile and combine this one also for a total credit line of 21500.00(all this was done within a three week period. Thank You board!!
By listening to Saar , George, and some of the other cotributors on this board, I have raised my total credit lines from 22000.00 to over 65000.00 in a matter of weeks( I think I over did it, but oh well). I got credit limits increase on 5 cards I already had. My total outstanding balances on all cards is 4000.00 and I will keep them low. I have learned so much from this board that my wife says I am addicted. I have excellent credit but someone always knows someone who needs help with credit questions or needs credit help--SOUTHTEXAS
