I received a letter in the mail from the IRS about 4 weeks ago saying I owed them an additional $510 on my 2009 taxes because Citimortgage forgave me over $4000 in debt that year.

I have never had a mortgage with Citimortgage. My mortgage was with Country wide until Bank of America bought them out. Citimortgage has not shown up on my credit report since I bought my house in 2006

I called Citimortgage and got some call center, who informs me I have no account with them and I should just IGNORE A LETTER FROM THE IRS!

I hung up in her face and called back and got someone on the phone who had no record of me in their system with the account number Citimortgage provided the IRS, my first and last name, or my social. I got their fax number and was told if we faxed them info, they would verify I had no account with them and send me info to dispute with the IRS.

I gave all this info to my dad, who contacted Citimortage and gave them the info they needed. They have not sent us anything back and my deadline to dispute is tomorrow.

I'm curious how this even happened in the first place

I wouldn't just ignore the letter. Get the documentation from Citimortgage and provide it to the IRS to show them that they've screwed up. Believe it or not, they do it all the time.

If you can't get them to fax the information to you in time, submit your dispute to the IRS without it anyway. You can always follow up later with the proper documentation.

I would not simply ignore the letter from the IRS. I have personally had a similar experience with the IRS. I would just deal with it now instead of waiting. If the IRS thinks you owe them money they will come after your bank accounts or paycheck to get it. Thanks! Heather with BoostMyScore.NET
