Boy, when you move, all kinds of weird things pop up. Everyone is nickel and dimeing us to death!!!!

We moved several states away and we kept a checking account open in the old state until things were settled. Once all my checks were cleared, the account was down to about $5 or so about 3 months ago. My intention was to close it. With everything else that's going on with our move, I forgot.

I received a letter from the bank (fairly nasty I might add) stating that they have closed our account and that we owe them $160. WTF??? How does this letter sound?? I know it's short, but hopefully effective. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks--debtchoked

We have recently received a letter from your bank for which we are quite confused. We have moved 3 states away to XXX and we have not authorized any transactions on our XXXX (name of bank) checking account for the past several months; therefore, we are asking for a detailed breakdown of the fees we allegedly owe your bank.

We look forward to a timely resolution of this matter.

Sounds good to me. But, let me ask--do you have service charges if the account is below a certain amount? Sounds to me like they added fees every month and it overdrafted your account. Then they probably added overdraft fees, then the next month's fee, overdraft, etc.

If so, I'd tell them that you thought the account was closed and ask nicely if they would remove the charges and close the account. Let them keep the $5!!
