My apt complex uses sub-metering for water. Our billing company started charging $2.50 to use a CC or payonline.

I sent them a nice letter citing state law, they ignored me. CC the SAG office, it is no longer on the bills, but they don't accept CC any more :(.

i think mbna offers this feature free.

i usually use my Free (100%) credit union billpay or paypal ;) to pay bills. Only 1 check a month, and thats for housing, since i don't trust them worth a piss.

they can charge you a fee to use a credit card. They can just name it something else, not a surcharge. Too many company's have found loopholes or are just plain ignorant.

    Choose a good lender, don't get GEORGE'D.

I thought all the smaller merchants - that do not have large CC volume charged the 2.5% to pass on the fee that visa/mc charge them? You mean this is illegal. Mind you, I pay with cash whenever someone try to tack on the fee.

Even Clemson University tacks on a fee for using a CC for paying tuition. I will have to check to see what the state of South Carolina laws are regarding this fee.

I don't think it's state law, I think it's their contract with Visa/MasterCard, although some states may also regulate it as well.

If it's just their contract, I don't know that I'd say it's illegal (which implies that a law is broken), but it is definitely a violation of their agreement (contract) with Visa/MasterCard.

rubyjean did not format her response properly; that's why you missed it. See if this is better? I highlighted her comments in red
