I have one tax lien from May '92 and if it's ten years, I should be able to get it dropped, right? I'm in MA, anyone know if it's 10 or 7 years? That will drop a few more if it's 7.

    I know a BK sticks for 10.

Not paid. Many were released. This one does not indicate released, so I'm thinking about getting it deleted on age alone. I'm under the impression that a release date then becomes the date + 7 years.

OK, well sorry that's beyond me, I just knew 605 of FCRA mentioned reporting on liens.

Hopefully, someone who can complete the answer for you will pipe up here !

unpaid tax liens can be reported forever from what I understand. The FCRA limits the reporting of paid tax liens to 7 years. It does not apply to unpaid tax leins -- at least that the way I understand it.

Rocket's right. Unpaid tax liens will follow you to the grave :)

When we first started the journey in Nov. DH had a tax lien that was showing unpaid (it was paid off in 1992). The date of the lien was 1981!!!!!!!!!

    ==========
    Unpaid 1981 to 1992 11 Yrs.
    Paid 1992 to 1999 7 Yrs.
    -----------------------------------------------
    Total Reporting PERIOD 18 YEARS.

Ever notice how paying one of these off aromatically extends the reporting period?

The problem is if she would have never paid it, it would be reported until the day she died. Unpaid tax liens can be reported to infinity.

No the problem is the previous reporting should never be added to the 7 years from pay off.

No, no do the math! I didn't get it deleted until Nov.

    1981-2003 UNPAID = 22 yrs

It never ever ever was reported as paid.

I had a real estate tax lien that had expired after 10 years and fell off my credit report. It was refiled by the county. I did challenge it with the credit reporting agency 'as not mine" and it was taken off my credit report even though it still exists.

Total Reporting PERIOD 18 YEARS.Plus 4 years beyond the 18 allowed = reported for a total of 22 years.
My math was correct as I was only addressing the 18 allowable years to report rather the total years it actually reported.

18 years allowed? Remember unpaid tax liens can be reported forever.

It was paid in 1992 7 years from 1992 is 1999
However they reported this paid lein from 1992 to 2003 for a total of 11 years after being paid which was 4 years over the 7 year limit.

I've read that unpaid tax liens stay on your record for 15 years, not indefinitely.

It depends on your state, as state law can supesede federal law. Here in CA an unpaid tax lien falls off in ten years.
