I still subscribe to a weekly paper from a small town I used to live in. A daughter wrote this letter to the editor. Wrong Attitude: Mattie Hattie (name changed) is 93 years old. In her lifetime she did not accumulate monetary wealth, only a wealth of experience. All of Mattie's life was lived by strong ethical and moral standards. She had a deep, strong belief and faith in God, and ardent respect for flag and country, and she was a confirmed and committed patriot. She had also an unusual belief in human nature, her brother and sister Homo Sapiens. She believed it ill behooves any of us to find fault with the rest of us. She lived all her life by old-fashioned country values, intergrity, loyalty, and reality. She worked hard and gave to the system, believed in the system, asked nothing of the system. Now Mattie is old, sick, and helpless, and the system has no further use for her. It's throwaway time. She is very expendable. Now we pay a parking lot to warehouse her in a dark corner, out of the way until the old, useless thing has the decency to die. Give her all the latest drugs to keep her passive and silent. So drugged she no longer has an interest in eating, smiling, or being sad. She is, after all demented. Of what use is she to society and she can't be recycled. Dementia will eventually claim her life, so why bother? I will tell you why I believe this to be an "attitude". A wrong attitude. She is a human still, with all the rights promised by our Constitution. She has a right to life, a life with as much quality and happiness it is possible for her to have. It is her right to live naturally and die naturally. It was a promise I made to her when she could still choose and express this wish. When she became aware of her impending loss of cognizance and reality. I can't keep that promise to her because the system owns her, and I cannot physically or financially care for her. So, I am expected to accept this as "best for her," like it or not. She is a statistic now, and I don't like it. Think about getting old and sick. What are your choices? Another old lady, her daughter, sincerely wishes for you that this does not happen to you or yours. Thank you for listening. Signed xxxx her daughter. This broke my heart! So many injustices in the world! But none any worse than those done to our children and the elderly! They are so deserving and in need of our intervention and protection! Maybe Bkev will take up another cause and fight for the rights of our elderly with as much gusto has he has taken up the fight to protect consumers against the unscrupulous Creditwrench? I sure hope so! We are all headed there, so we need to take up the cause and fight for our elderly's rights! Tuit
