My sister (39) and her son (20) moved down from Colorado to live with us until February 1st when they must move out. They got jobs and save a little bit of money. She decided to try and rent an apartment so she found one and applied. Well as I expected, they ran her credit (score 443) and found a collections for an old apartment in CO for around $1200.00. Denied. I'm trying to help her/them with their finances and getting back on track. She has over 20 collections on her report. A couple of judgments. It's ugly. Anyway, should I have her start with the "not mine" letters to see if, at least, that apartment will come off? Should she try and 'settle' that item? I believe it's in collections from just over a year ago. Should she have the agencies 'validate' the date or try to? Any ideas here will be helpful.
Re: Re: A Fear Realized PS Get rid of all old addressees first. Then send CAs validation letters Then dispute the others as not mine.
Re: Re: A Fear Realized When you say get rid of old addresses first, how does one go about doing that? Send the three agencies (EXP, EQX, TU) a letter saying: " ? " Sorry to be so 'ignorant' but I'm not sure what is to be done here.
Re: Re: Re: A Fear Realized Take a look at all three credit reports and see what addresses they are reporting then you can either call the CRA or write a letter listing all of the addresses that you want off. Tell them that the addresses are incorrect (never lived there). Sometimes it takes a letter or two or a couple of phone calls but you should be able to remove most if not all of the old addresses. The reason why you want to remove the addresses with the CRA before you start with the collection accounts is because it eliminates one more item that a CA could use to verify that the account you are disputing is yours. Good Luck
Re: Re: Re: A Fear Realized Equifax 888-567-8688 Experian 800-583-4080 Trans Union 800-916-8800 Call them. Most addresses can be easily removed.
Re: Re: Re: A Fear Realized I agree. Get the old addresses off. Then send the validation letters to the CAs. When you get the green card back, dispute with the CRAs. Hopefully it will get removed somewhere along the line.
