The "devious idea" thread had me thinking. What if....

The government took over credit reporting in this country?

I can see a few arguments in favor off the top of my head.

    1. It would reduce the buying and selling of personal information, making identity theft more difficult. Businesses would no longer have ANY reason to use your SSN.

    2. Authority would finally be coupled with accountibility. There would be obvious avenues of recourse when you were being screwed. The process would be more open to consumers.

    And two major downsides:

1: Big Brother, where art thou? The goverment would suddenly have access to huge amounts of info about where, when and how you spend your money. They have a lot of that info already in aggregate form, but little ability to tie it to you unless you're buying a federally registered product.

    2. It might be a short step from collecting the data to using it on behalf of creditors, which tend to be large corporations (and campaign donor$) The government would have all the info it needed to order wage garnishment, etc.

I'm not sure where I fall on this issue. But I thought it might provoke some interesting discussion.

OMG...I shudder at the thought!!!! I don't think biblical discussions or politics belong in a forum like this or any public forum not dedicated to that theme, but I have to say that this would be one step short of the microchip inserted under the skin with all of our id info, etc. The mark of the beast, etc.

The very LAST thing I would want is the government to take over. You have to get permission from the government to SUE the government...lol. (Okay, that was a broad statement, but true in some cases.) We would never get errors corrected...just look at those poor people who have been falsely targeted by the IRS, or those guys who are being levied for child support when they don't even have a kid because a computer says they do. Oh...:::shudder:::: Ohhhhh Doc............

If they can't regulate it -they can't operate it!
