I really made a mess of my life in 99! After 30 years of "perfect credit" and assets most people only wish for I went into a very serious state of depression. By the time I came out of it I had sold all assets including my home (to a neighbor) my car and given away all my personal belongings( I guess thats the good news after learning about written contracts). The bad news is I also left behind a ton of credit card debt. This all happened in a matter of months. I finally got some help. When I left the hospital I had nothing left but what I was wearing and my cell phone! I have been very fortunate to get back and face the world one day at a time. Now for the questions. I have not had the nerve to check my credit. The one time I worked up the courage and called they said I had to send a check along with my address, ssn etc. I panicked as I didn't know what they may do with the info and I didn't have a checking account. I only changed the address on my drivers lic this year. I feel like a fugative! I have worked for the last 3 1/2 yrs for the same company and no one has sent me anything. I did get a lot of calls on my cell phone and if I didn't recognize the caller on ID I just deleted them as I couldn't handle it. I can't repay these debts and I need to know where to begin. I also think I am in chexsystem. The company that kept calling me had a way of reversing the calls and making it look like I called them. I informed my carrier and they said they would investigate. It stopped along with the calls. By the way, I saw an attorney that recommended BK but I couldn't afford to go that route at the time. Its been over 4 years since this all happened. Any hope. Thanks Lin
Hi Lin, welcome to the board! Glad to hear you made it out of your depression, that's a cumbersome monkey off your back. As for a direction, roll up your sleeves and get to reading! There is alot of homework you can do while you work up the nerve to pull up your CRs. We all had that nasty OMG what am I gonna see feeling, the adrenaline rush as you peruse the damage, the berating yourself and mourning period and then you come to terms with it and just DEAL. By starting to read now, you will understand alot more of what you are looking at and not freak out quite as bad because you are informed. This is my fav link to a whole chain of good reading: http://consumers.creditnet.com/straighttalk/board/showthread.php?s=&postid=352826#post352826 The good news, in my opinion, is that you have some years under your belt which will help with the SOL depending on what state you are in. For example, I glanced at the SOL for the state I just moved to which is Texas and it is 4 years compared to the SOL in Colorado for the same thing which is 6 years. Do you have a ballpark grand total for your debt? I say avoid a BK at all costs, you only have a little over 3 years left anyway before it all drops off. Why add time to your sentence? You also might still have some good TLs from before this all started that will help when you start to rebuild your credit. Hope that helps!

Re: Re: A real challenge. I need direction Nah LB change it back, most will find it helpful and those who don't subscribe to 'ignorance is bliss' and will rely on others to explain things that they could have found themselves with enough prep work. I think I would be insulted by myself for showing such bad form if someone was trying to help me. I think some people just don't know how to take your bluntness or your sometimes enigmatic replies (which just require some thinkage)

Thanks Ice_Siren, The recommendations confirmed what I felt. The statue is 4 years on opened and 5 on written. When I started my research on all of this ( hundreds of hours) before I found your site I wasn't sure what credit cards fell under. Several sites with FAQ to attorneys where giving 5 years? As far as my original debt its was around 70k total. All CC and mostly cash advances. Not pretty is it! I did have some Dept S accounts that I didn't use but I'm sure they have been closed by now. I have not used credit since 99. I have a friend that was going to add me as a signer on her checking acct and I got a turn down. They gave me a disclosure and a phone number but I just couldn't call. I think I had a small over draft of some sort (less than $300.00) that I confirmed when I first got out of the hospital. I could have had a check returned as a matter of miss adding, I just don't know! I read everything on your site and I guess the first thing is to pull the 3 cra and take a look. I've just been afraid it would start the calls again. I was also afraid to have them update my address. As far as some of the other comments about giving "Newbes" advice as to reading all the info available on this site before asking questions , I think it was great. It would have saved me a lot of time if I had done that in the first place rather than floundering. "There ain't no free lunch". Sorry for the double post here. Thank's Lin

Thanks IBrown, Thanks for the info. I never find knowledge insulting. That's what keeps us from staying Newbes! Lin

Re: A real challenge. I need direct Wow. Just what you stated I would think cleaning up your credit would be one of the last things you would want to do. To have such a severe breakdown as you posted. I would just try to get your life back in some kind of normalcy if possible. Since it's been 99 since your credit was in the toilet. Just wait out the 7 years until it drops off.
Re: A real challenge. I need direct Trade wiz 50 Thats been my feeling! OJ gets away with murder but I spend 7+ years in hell. How about tring to fix checksystem? Thanks Lin
Re: Re: Re: A real challenge. I need direction Holy COW....I'm a MAN???! I need to sit down and have a long talk with myself!
No problem Lin We all were newbies at one point and I still am. I read the boards for a few months before signing up, signed up and read for a few more months. Then I pulled my credit reports and that was when the ball started rolling. I had my college disaster years on there and knew I had that old stuff, but then I had a brand new rash of BS on there that should not and will not be soon..lol I am no expert by any means so a word of caution is in order. An SOL does not mean that you cannot get sued, but it can be used as a defense if needed. As for if pulling the credit report stirs things up? I am not sure since I have never done a search on that and have no personal experience myself. I would start a new thread and ask someone on here just in case just because the monies owed is rather high. Or I am sure someone will answer when reading this...hint hint..lol! We are all here to help and nothing perks our experts up like a new obstacle to surmount! Post away! Also I think it is on the second page now, but look for my thread named must....sleep..zzzzzzzz. Butch said some wonderful things at the bottom of that thread that I feel you will get something out of.
Ice_Siren, Thanks for the kind words. I read the threads and I fall under commitment. I stayed up all night for a while researching as I feel knowledge is power! One site kept leading to another and so on ...and so on... Now my concentration is to stay alert and try to go forward. The hard part of the last 5 years was the lack of knowledge of my situation! At least I don't have any of the big 5's. I know the SOL in IA word for word and at least feel armed with my rights in regard to limitations. I have been living in a very unsure day to day mode til I finally got on the computer. I use to check my car every day a hundred times to make sure it was still there(my only real possition at this time). Again thanks as a little encouragement goes a long way! Lin
