....tapping foot ahem CCNSteve. Would you care to explain why you were the sole cause of 6000 people needing valium today?
I can't believe I've gotten so addicted! I was sitting here staying swear words because I couldn't get on creditnet, and I've got tons of work to do.
Re: Re: ABOUT TIME!!!! I had to go to my standby hobby (genealogy) to keep from going crazy. Nobody emails me
Re: Re: ABOUT TIME!!!! So many people were doing that back about 1965 that 60 minutes even put out an expose on it. Some people were reserecting dead babies back then. As usual, 60 minutes didn't tell anywhere near the whole story. They didn't dare because if they told the whole story it would have done far more damage to the credit industry than any good it might have done. Of course, it wasn't long before they passed Federal laws against it and if you tried it today you would spend about 20 years or so as a guest of the federal prison system. A year or so later some dude in New York City was found to have reserected at least 250 dead babies and they caught him and threw him in the bucket but they made the mistake of letting him out on bond and to the best of my knowledge they haven't seen hide nor hair of him since. They think he must have had one or two more they never found out about.
Thats why family members, although its the last thing on their minds, need to notify the CRA's of a loved one's passing. There is a social security death index that is widely available for free on the internet. It shows people's full names, and their social security numbers, and is updated monthly, so information is out there for anybody before the family is anywhere near thru the grieving process. About a month after Dad died, and before I found this site, he got an offer for a pre-approved $10K credit card. Can you imagine what would happen in the wrong hands? Sure he is deceased, and you don't think its a big problem, but it can certainly wreak havoc on an estate in probate. Just the other day in Dallas, a gentleman died at home. A transport service came out to take the body away. Well, his loved ones did not think to empty his pockets before he was taken away, only to find out that someone in the transport service had stolen his credit cards and went on a shopping spree! There are some sick sick people in this world.
That's a whole different scenario than the one that 60 minutes talked about back in 1965. Back then the crooks would go back through small town newspapers looking for babies that had died when they were less than maybe 3 years old and trace it all the way back to who attended the funeral thereby coming up with the maternal grandparents and they had all the info to pull the birth certificate and reserect the dead baby, get a bunch of credit cards and spend them to the max and disappear. Now the newspapers have to limit information in obituaries so that can't happen. Lots of other safeguards have been put in place too as well as stiff federal laws with which to punish the criminals. As long as man has a brain some will always use theirs to cheat or hurt others to their benefit. Here in Oklahoma City and in many other cities too the latest scam is to get religion and start your own church then bilk those who come to your church out of huge amounts of money. That's pretty prevalent in the Hispanic communities. Many of the newly self made preachers are ex-cons who just got out of prison and in a few months they got their own church and are busy beating the believers out of huge bucks. In a couple of years or so they are wearing expensive clothes and driving new Mercedes automobiles, living the good life but doing no good for anybody but themselves. Respectable people they are now. Yeah sure! You got that right.
