About to trash my FICO :-(

All this angst about high balances and rate hikes and now I'm about to max every card I've got to within inches of my credit limits.

One of my cats has suddenly just stopped eating, drinking and using the litter box. He's been like this since late Sunday and now he just lays on the floor with his eyes half-open. I'm taking him to the vet this afternoon. I have no idea what this is going to cost. I'm going through my checking and savings accounts before I touch the cards, but if it takes the cards, then that's where I go.

What twisted sense of humor would send all this my way on top of being laid off in this economy?

    Wish us luck, gang.

I hope your visit goes well. I know how you feel about your cat, I have two. They are just like having two more children

If it is something serious ask the vets office if they can work with you. I know my vets office donates time and resources for many different causes.

    Best Wishes!

mine acted the same way in July. I knew it was really bad when she sat out and let the rain hit her and she didn't get up and move. Found out she had been hit by a car. She had surgery and is doing fantastic. It was a mere 800 dollars. Never thought I'd spend that on a cat.

Since DH was laid off and then took a job where we get paid on the whim of a madman (he's two months behind +1500 in travel expenses we had to pay AMEX)

My 9yr old broke both his ankles
My 10yr old broke her finger
She messed up her shoulder - she pitches FP and is going to PT weekly

My two dogs got sick within hours of each other to the tune of $900 (luckily the Vet's daughter plays on 10yr olds rec team :) )

my 18yr old wrecked her car

DH has had to double some of his meds (gee wonder why?)

ANd I'm scared to death to sneeze.

Everybody will be OK, your kitty will be OK, and you will get thru this. We take it one day at a time here, and that's all anyone can do. Good luck!

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling about your cat....I feel the exact same way about my little furrball of love...her name is Cali. I often tell my DH that he'll go before she goes, if it comes down to it, lol.

Go do whatever it takes to make your cat all better. Good luck!

I can just hear the collection calls now......

"How irresponsible can you be? You spent all that money on a CAT? For $10 you could have gone to an animal shelter and gotten another one. For what you spent you could have gotten a couple of hundred cats. Where's my payment?"

Good luck with your cat. I lost a cat about 25 years ago. She went out and evidently got in a fight and got bitten. Came home and hid under the couch, but she spent a lot of time under there. By the time we realized something was wrong, it was too late.

Q: You know the worst thing about eating a cat?

A: Its little paws hitting you in the face.

If he needs emergency surgery or something, call your local humane society to see if they'll help with the vet bill short term.

I've done that with injured strays around here.

I deeply appreciate the concern and empathy MOST of you have shown. I'm frankly amazed at how many of you responded with perfect understanding of how I feel. The others (and you know who you are) -- not funny, okay? You wouldn't tell dead baby jokes to someone with a sick child. (I would hope you wouldn't tell them at all.)

It's good to know I'm in a community of people who care, and not just about money and credit.

My FICO is safe for the moment; I was able to handle the bill with cash. The lab work will take a couple of days, but the cat's temp is normal and the vet couldn't feel any odd lumps or other indications of a tumor or other horrors. I was sent home with some appetite-stimulating pills, some electrolyte-balancing solution and instructions to force-feed the poor little guy as much as possible.

Guess this really doesn't belong in the credit section and they may yank it elsewhere, but again, thanks so much for the good wishes and commiseration. Cat people are the nicest in the world. Dog people are okay, too, as long as they don't make sick cat jokes.

P.S. Most I ever spent on a cat in one fell swoop: $1,600 for surgery and intensive care for a week at Cornell University, and about $300 two weeks later at my regular vet's for more lab work and prescriptions due to post-op infection. No regrets.

To all of you sweet and caring people who responded to this thread:

I'm very sorry to tell you that Rajah died in my arms this morning. He was only six years old. Though he had no discernible symptoms, the bloodwork indicates he had cancer. My vet is doing an autopsy this afternoon.

I just want to thank you again for your support.

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

    Author unknown...

Oh my god. I am so sorry. At least he was with you when he went and not in some cage at the vet's office.

    My thoughts are with you.
