Hello Everyone, I have a ? and can't find the answer. I know it's probably here somewhere but I am getting frustrated and was hoping someone could help out. I have an old citibank account that has been sent to collections (actually this is one of many that I am trying to clean up). On my credit report the collection company that is handling this is First Resolution and under DATE OPENED it says 4/2002. This account (Citibank) was actually opened many years ago, maybe 10 or so. Does this DATE OPENED notation mean the date I opened the Citibank account or the date the collection agency took over the account? I guess I am trying to figure out if it is a reaged account or if it is something on the credit report I just don't understand. I am just starting to fumble through this stuff and learn. Thanks in advance for any replies!!!

That collection agency is using the date they got the account as the date opened.

How long ago did you default on this debt? What state are you in?

Definite FCRA violation. It's called re-aging the account and it is illegal. They must use the opened date of the original account. By doing what they did, they extended the 7-year reporting period to 2009.

I'm not exactly sure when I defaulted but I do know it was at least 4 years ago. I am in New York. The credit report says the account is scheduled to continue on record until 10-2006?
