I recently received a latter from MKM Acquisitions LLC requesting to settle a debt that I never opened. The correspondence indicates it was a Gas Card that was opened in 1995. A previous address listed on the statement is an address and city I have never lived it. The statement shows that MKM purchased this delinquent account in 1997. I regularly check my credit report and it has never shown on my credit report. At this point I'm not sure how to handle this problem. The statment does have my first name middle initial and last name. I'm not sure if I should or need to contact them and if so by phone or certified mail. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
In this case you should just call them and tell them that this is not your account, the address they have on you is incorrect even though it is in fact your name, ask them if they need you to fill out an affidavit to send to them, I am not sure this late that you can file a police report, you can at any time activate a fraud alert with all three credit reporting agencies. They may want identifying information from you to verify this is not you. If your social security number matches up what they have on file, then you will want to contact to social security administration and let them know someone has been using your personal social security number and see what steps they want you to take, you can also visit the Federal Trade Commission web site to read up move under their ID Theft section. Another thing if you see that incorrect address on your credit report as the credit reporting agency to give you the address of the company that reported it, and dispute that it be removed. Good post. However, you could just write them that the account isn't yours, is out of statute even if it were, and that you demand that they never contact you again. Either will work and I'd take the route which is the quickest.
