I am comparing my credit reports and see that some of the same accounts are reported differently on each one such as: same account # --on one report as written off and the other as charge off, same account # --on reports as charge off and the other as collection, or same account #-- different amount on each report. So, how do I dispute these items and what laws back the dispute?
Written off and charged off are the same thing. I personally would start by disputing as "not my acct - please delete". That is how I had the most success. When I had an acct from the original creditor listed as well as from a collector, I disputed the original first as a duplicate entry. When they deleted it, I then disputed the collection as not mine. Original creditors when they have sold a charge off are supposed to list the acct as transferred or sold 0 balance. They hardly ever do this. So instead of disputing it as listed incorrectly, I disputed as duplicate. Also, if you have alot of old addresses listed, and some of the derogs belong to those addresses, dispute the addresses as never lived there.
