There is a local company here that says they add a 5% charge for credit card payments.

I thought they weren't allowed to do that...

they aren't. However many do. Report them to VISA/MASTERCARD/AMEX.

They can offer 5% discount for cash however. . that is legal.

    Sam,

Do you know how to report them? (I know I should just use the search feature because this has been discussed before)

AGAINST THE LAW IN MANY STATES and violates VISA/MC policy.

Get the name, address, phone # of the business, call or write VISA/MC~~~and the company will receive a letter or call from VISA/MC and be notified about the fines involved up to and including TERMINATION OF THEIR ACCOUNT!!!

Do not "JUST PAY CHECK/CASH"...they WIN that way!!!

DON'T BUY ANYTHING...TELL THEM THEY WILL BE REPORTED WITHIN THE WEEK!!!

George is correct. Some merchants try to get around it by offering a "cash discount" -- that's not kosher either. The agreements that are in place between merchant and the banks they use to process cc transactions require level pricing for all forms of payment. I've seen this language used for Amex, V and MC. I assume it's similar for Discover and Diners.

Visa USA and MasterCard both have "consumer comment" addresses -

    Visa - AskVisa@Visa.com
    MC- http://www.mastercard.com/cgi-bin/contactus.cgi?template=ContactUsMV

I think the FINES can be $1,000+ depending on the number of VIOLATIONS!!!

It is the Whittier Party House - we're investigating doing a wedding reception there.

Personally, I'd rather elope and save the money, but my fiance is itailian. His family is very traditional (and huge in number), and they love there weddings!

THEY ALWAYS SAY~~~people who use CREDIT CARDS spend up to 10% more than CASH/CHECK customers...SO YOUR GOING TO PUNISH THE CREDIT CARD CUSTOMERS???

Also 99% of credit card tranactions authorize in 1/10 of a second to 10 seconds and don't BOUNCE...also CASH has a *COST* to the business...it's either ARMORED TRANSPORT picking it up, or taking the deposit to the bank, or the amout of change needed for the customers who buy $1.97 with their $100 BILL!!!

ALSO EVERY SINGLE PENNY, NICKEL, DIME, QUARTER, $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00, $50.00, $100.00 HAS TO BE COUNTED MANY, MANY TIMES (starting with the customer)...probably up to 10 times before it get to the bank...

Here is the way around it just raise prices 5% and charge that for everybody no matter the method of payment.
Perhaps they have already done that -who knows?!
