I have a collection agency on my case about past due rent on an old apartment I moved out of last year. I requested validation of the debt and they sent me some statements from the property management company but there doesn't appear to be any judgement against me. I moved out of the apartment three months before the lease was finally broken as well.

I've already ordered them to cease all phone contact and I haven't received a call since then. My question is what do I do next? Should I send a letter requesting a settlement?

I called the original creditor and they said I can't pay them since it's in collections.

Time is on your side, so you may just want to wait for awhile. But if you're prepared to settle and move on with your life, then yes, the next step would be to try and get a feel for what kind of settlement you can negotiate with the CA. Keep all of your communication in writing, don't sound to eager to reach an agreement, and whatever you do- never take their first offer.
