Does anyone know if you send a validation letter, is the CA required by law to respond within 30 days?

What time frame can I expect after mailing the validation letter?

Should I request a 30 day response on my letter, like they did on there's?

    Thank You!

You can request a 30 time period, but there is no time limit for their response. The rule of thumb is basically that, since they assume the debt is VALID if you do not respond within 30 days, you can assume that it is NOT VALID if they don't validate within the same period.

They have all the time in the world to respond (so long as they cease collections, and mark it in dispute).

There are a couple of great validation MUST-READs out there, unfortunately LB59 is no longer allowed to link to them. You'll have to "search"

The CA is not required to validate :) They simply have to quit collection activities until the do validate. I have sent out single validation letters never to be heard from again. (They weren't reporting to the CRAs).

We use the 30 day response time in dispute/validation letters here as a "reasonable time period", so if they don't respond, and are reporting, we can lead them down the road to FDCPA violations, or set them up to force the CRA to delete the TL.

The threads are now in the "Hall of Fame" postings. Very first post on the board.

(And I guess we were typing at the same time).

Thanks for everyones help. I am really learning a lot and am feeling a lot less nervous about the CA's letter.
