Many of you already know I've been trying to get Allstate to delete an inquiry on my report. After sending them my FOURTH LETTER last week...I get a response in the mail today: blah blah blah we want to help you blah blah..."In an effort to keep insurance costs as competetive as possible for greatest number of policy holders, we now consider the information contained in credit reports when determining our customers insurance rates. With this goal in mind, and as permitted by law, we ordered a credit report. (WHAAAAAT????) In your letter, you indicated that the credit inquiry was an error. As I explained in two prior letters, there is a procedure that we must follow in order to remove a credit inquiry. If any solicitations were recieved in your home, soliciting telephone calls to your residence, or if you contacted an Allstate agency, then this will not be considered an error and will not be removed." more blah blah...then it asks for me to send then a copy of my report showing the inquiry. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE???? I sent then FOUR letters, each stating I never requested any insurance information from them, that I don't currently have insurance with them, and I included all my personal info. and the date the inquiry was made. Why should I have to send them a copy of my report??? I apologize for this being so long...but I am pissed off beyond belief right now.
If you have given them 4 chances to correct the mistake and all of your documentation is in order, I would file suit in small claims court.
allstate all of a sudden cancelled my policy when they decided to start pulling reports. they didnt even notify me. I have state farm now and they have not given me 1 problem so far. By the way, I found out I was cancelled when my cards expired and i didnt get new ones...called them to ask and they told me 'you cancelled insurance with us' BS! A week later I get something in the mail telling me my policy was cancelled, with no other explanation. they owe me $160 to this day. stay away from allstate. I also have like 6 or more inquiries from Allstate all occuring during a 1 week period when I guess they decided to cancel me.
I was planning on filling out the small claims form, then sending a copy to them along with a letter giving them one more chance to correct their error before I file. And trust me, if they ignore that, I WILL FILE. I have copies of their letters to me, my letters to them, certified mail receipts...but I just need clarification on a few things: -In each of my letters, I gave them the date that they made the inquiry, as well as my personal info. They always responded by saying they need a copy of my credit report showing the inquiry to remove it. Is that a legit defense for them to use that as an excuse for not removing it? -In one of the letters from them, they said "In NY, we can process an inquiry without your permission". Isn't this misleading information??? To the average consumer (me) I interpret that as meaning anyone can look at your credit file without you knowing. Scary! -Is it considered one violation (no permissible purpose)or are there more? Failing to correct their error once I notified them? I sent 4 letters! Please...if anyone can help me out, I would very much appreciate it.
my mortgage guy asks who was our insurance carrier. I told him erie insurance and he said they were good and he wantd to make sure we did not go with allstate as he said they are the worst carrier out there. My lawyer said allstate was the worst company he has had to deal with as they like to ignore claims. I remember calling allstate years ago for car insurance and their quote was about 5 times as much as I have now.
Isn't that called credit file poisoning? I would definitely go after them. All those inquiries will look bad on your CR for 2 years. I learned a couple of years ago allsnake is a bad company. They tried to rip my wife off after one of their insureds rear ended her.
In some states, if you apply for insurance, the company does not even have to tell you they are pulling credit. They can just do it. In other states, all they have to do is tell you, but they don't have to ask. Then in some states, they must ask permission. Heck, in Alaska, they must ask permission to pull your MVR's!!! I started to write down the requirements in each state, but it is a long list and I was too busy.

Vel (can I call you Vel?) Sorry for the delay - I talked to my friends at Allstate and they said the inquiry could have come from anywhere in the system and they had no way of knowing the origination. (Car ins., Putnam Financial, Deerbrook, Encompass, etc.) I don't remember if you told me what state you live in but you can also file a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner (your state and IL).
You will never know how lucky you were to have avoided this company. One visit to our site and you will get a glimpse of the hell you have avoided. Your people know what they are talking about. Heck, even their own agents speak of how corrupt Allstate is.
If anyone recalls the hurricane that wiped out south Florida, the worst insurance company to have had was Allstate. People painted nasty comments about being in "good hands" with allstate on thier houses. Instead of paying claims on those devastated by the hurricane, allstate's division covering that area filed bankruptcy and paid NOONE! Never use Allstate!

Re: The original story It is entirely possible that your report was pulled in error for someone else's application for insurance. All it would take is a typo in the SSN.
Re: The original story I can understand how a big company like Allstate could have pulled my report by accident...but all they had to do was correct their error. Instead, they chose to violate my rights. I want them to pay. Burbs Guy- I live in NY. Would your Allstate friend know why they are refusing to do anything about this until I send them my credit report? I really don't see why they would need it. In one of their letters to me, they admitted to pulling my report for auto insurance. I'm very familiar with the Allstatesucks site...there is no way in HELL I would ever consider insurance with those people!
A few years ago I was in an auto accident which was right at the time of my insurance renewal. My current ins.company were a bunch of idiots so I took out a policy at Allstate. They knew about my accident but the other driver kept saying he was not at fault ( I was rear ended ) so no final assesment of fault was made yet. They told me they would not up my rates as a result of the accident until the next renewal if it was judged to be my fault. I used their payment option, gave them a $1800+ deposit and some post dated cheques and they gave me a pink slip. A few weeks later I got a registered letter informing me my policy was cancelled due to my being held responsible for 50% of the accident and they were keeping my $1800 as a administration fee. I had to sue the mothers to get my money back. I wonder how many people would have let the matter drop? I won't go into how my father beat the s*** out of the agent for ripping off his 17 year old son.
