I'm curious...with those scores why you are not getting into prime cards.

Or...well...maybe we're bandying semantics. I consider "non-prime" to be cards that charge excessive fees, have interest rates at the high end of the spectrum, etc.

Why can you not get cards with little/no fees, good competitive rates, etc with those FICOs?

I had really bad FICOs (low 500s) and have managed to climb to the 700 range in just a few months. But even I have some cards with competitive rates (6% interest, no annual fee, etc).

Am I missing something? Or are you literaly trying to get PRIME cards?

I would love to have a "real" credit card. Just not in the, uhhh... cards for me, right now.

I've got a BK that's now 2.5 years old. When I broke 700, I went on an application frenzy - BofA, Amex Blue and Chase all turned me down citing just the BK. Chase surprised me, since I had gotten an auto loan from them back in April and had 6+ months of payments under my belt. With those same scores, Providian turned me down INSTANTLY w/out pulling my CR, leading me to think they've got me on their own black list. Irony is, I did not burn Providian in my BK - but I had a card w/a zero balance. They cancelled the account and I suspect put me on their black list. Nice, eh?

Here are the cards I've gotten recently - Target Guest and this Household card. I tried the Target Visa and was turned down, but got a whopping $300 on the Guest card. Still haven't used it, figuring when I use it I'll have many more months of history so my score won't get hit too hard.

The reason I'm delighted w/the Household $5k limit - well, until I start dealing w/them, of course - is that I don't think my other large CL cards will be in business for very long. Aspire is a skeleton crew, nobody answers the phones. DMB is not giving out CL increases and has been on thin ice for a while. The best of the bunch - hard to believe - is Cap1, as far as being in business a year from now.

I've been approved for a mortgage and I'm closing in a few weeks. As long as I have some credit on some cards for the next few years, I can wait out the BK scarlet letter thing. Even though the BK is locking me out of prime cards, I had no problem qualifying for the best mortgage rates.

So, yeah, it would be nice to have a real card in my name, but I can wait.

You shall not be king of primetime:)

    My cards:

    Providian 8600
    Orchard 5200
    Get Smart 2500
    Dillard's 7500

    That's 23,800 in credit, folkes.

Until First Consumer's Bank shuttered its operation, I had a $3500 line with them. That would put me well over 25k.

I don't know if I agree with you DanS ;) that
sub-prime cards rarely ever turn into prime, that all you get are small credit limits and lousy service. In 2000, I started out with the crappy, partially secured Capital One Mastercard, $500 limit partially secured with my $99 check, a 17% APR and $29 annual fee. Now, almost four years later, my limit is $8000, 8.9% APR, NO annual fee, and my $99 check was returned with interest. I know this can't possibly be the case with everyone, but it DOES happen. Cheers!

Good to hear it can happen. In 18 months, I've grown my unsecured Cap1 from $500 to $1900, had the fee waived and gotten a 2% decrease in interest to 12.9%

    DanS,

Did you go through PFB or Cap1 Retention to get the annual fee waived (permanently????)

I call up and get it waived once a year. PITA, but it saves me $59

Don't know how you do it.....
I've been trying for the last 3 years, no dice. I only get it halved, not waived entirely.

An auto loan, even w/cap1, at 8% is not what I'd consider sub-prime. I've got a loan w/Chase at 12% - is that prime?

Even disqualifying the auto loan, the revolving credit at enormous interest rates has me stepping down from my throne as the King Of Crap Credit and I will now be someone's uhh... prince?

Question for the new King of Crap Credit - do you have other prime cards? I have NONE!!! This is my entire kingdom!!

And I've been taking advantage of a 3.99% promo from DMB, so my utilization has gone up and will be up until August when it ends. My high scores to date have been
    EXP 725, TU 716, EQ 678
