My husband is being harassed by a â??collection agencyâ? that is located in California for a false debt. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction for assistance- since we live in Massachusetts. We received a letter from an American Credit Bureau, Inc. regarding a supposed debt a retailer also located in California. They are claiming that he owes a couple of thousand dollars to them for equipment purchased in 2001. My husband originally ordered the equipment for ($999) but the shipping company had lost the order. Out of frustration he then decided to cancel the order completely and the company credited his charge card in full. A few weeks later the company states that they delivered the equipment and then tried to charge his card. (He had for unrelated reasons cancelled the card because it has been lost- and had a new one reissued- so luckily for us they were unable to charge it.) They then sent us a delivery receipt by the shipping company supposedly with his signature on it- but he did not sign for it and the place for a signature is actually left blank. The box next to it has his name printed by the shipper - it is the same handwriting as the rest of the slip. We do not have any equipment from this company. We do not owe them money. It is now 2004 and they are sending us letters (with large amounts of added interest) claiming that they will place negative credit rating on his credit report and place him on some dishonored check system. I tried to look up this company online and this site is all I found: http://www.netscalped.com/_disc4/000009a1.htm This site claims that these people are not what they say they are. When I looked up the phone # on google- I got two company names with the same # and address. The names of the people on our letters are an attorney with a different but similar sounding name as on the website listed above. The address and phone number for the agency is the same as what is listed on the website listed above. The addess for attorney is actually a PO Box in another city in CA. I have all the correspondence and a copy of the â??deliveryâ? receipt and I sent the secretary of state in California a brief of the problem. But I don't know what else to do. Should I contact a lawyer? I sure hope you can help us in some way and greatly appreciate your time. http://www.netscalped.com/_disc4/000009a1.htm
I don't know what other readers think, but this one has fraud written all over it. Aside from validation, I would not only consult with a lawyer, but also contact the AG in California AND the postmaster general's mail fraud unit. This way, you're hitting the slimeball from all angles. That site you're linking to is VERY interesting! I'm so sick and tired of hearing about scams and their innocent victims. Keep us posted!
Thanks for the reply! I filed a complaint with the AG of California and will file also with AG in MA. I have a friend who's buddies with a lawyer in California so I will ask him to look into it for us as well. It seems like everywhere you go there is someone waiting to take you for a ride- it's very disheartening. I'm glad I found this site- it is very helpful and informative! THanks again!
