What would be my best route to correct this ongoing error by Amex on my credit reports?

I have an AMEX account that was included in a BK in 1990. It is showing up on my credit report as a charge of and closed by credit grantor in 1996. I first disputed this account and it came back verified from AMEX. So I call the credit bureau unit at AMEX and get a letter dated 5-6-02 that the account will be removed from my credit reports within 30 days. After I spoke with the people at AMEX I disput this item agin and on 5-17-02 it comes up as verified by AMEX.

    What do I do next?

Send the Credit Bureaus a copy of the letter that Amex sent to you on 05-06-02 which says they will remove the account from your report within thirty days. Then request that the CB go ahead and delete.
    Hopefully, that will work.

I agree completely with Calmest_LA. Then, step two, if they don't take action based upon the AmEx letter you provide (and they may well not), then you've got a great basis for an inexpensive do-it-yourself small claims lawsuit that may make you a few thousand dollars richer AND get you the deletion. :) Of course, you'll need to get "damaged" first (turned down for something) and be able to demonstrate a clear papertrail that you've done everything possible to get the CRA to comply with their responsibilities under federal law.

Anyway, I've jumped way ahead here. I just wanted you to know that all is certainly not lost if they don't play ball with you at the next step. There will be plenty of time to get opinions and assistance from experienced consumers on this board in that eventuality.
