I've never used them, or know anyone who has, but I noticed they've been in the news quite a bit lately. If you've ever thought of using them, you may want to check out this story: http://kdka.com/local/local_story_262164546.html
My wife works for Ballenger Group...the call center in Maryland that handles all the Ameridebt accounts. As of Nov1 Ameridebt will no longer take new clients. In fact they just fired 60 people in the call center Friday...b/c of the pending doom...
They did a big story about them on the NBC evening news Friday night. Pretty much tore them down, and exposed what complete losers they are.
This has been going on for over a year. There was a story (a stay-away story) about them in either the Washington Post or the Baltimore Sun a year or so ago. Seems their "non-profit" activity is actually a front for a big profit-making deal for the owners.
Run don't walk away from them!!!!!!!! DH and I have been in their program for over 3 years and just recently found out that they DO NOT deliver what they promise. We applied for a mortgage and were totally embarrassed when credit report came back. All the accounts that we have with them are listed as charge offs, paid charge offs, and over 180 days lates on credit report. We thought this would save our credit but it ruined it and now I don't know how to fix it. And it has costs us our dream house because now we did not think we would need such a large down-payment and the finance rates were just sky high.
Get documentation of the "damage" from the mortgage (refusal or increased rates and down payment). Then run, don't walk, to a lawyer. You may want to check out this link: http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2003/09/08/daily35.html. This suit is in Missouri. I know action was taken against them in Maryland a year or more ago. According to the article, there was a suit filed by Illinois earlier this year, and one filed and settled (for more than $2M) in DC in 1999. If I were you, I'd file a lawsuit against them for a lot of money--treble damages, mental stress, etc. Maybe you'll get a settlement. And make sure you get something that says you paid them money and they didn't pay the creditors. Maybe you'll get enough for a down payment.
Apparently, this is a very timely topic. Here is a link to a story that will run tomorrow. It looks like the hammer is coming down on the so-called "non-profit" credit counseling services. The IRS and FTC are now getting involved. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/14/b...00&en=42d8b66a1fd48620&ei=5062&partner=GOOGLE
