I remember MJ once complaining about the $10 charge for flight baggage protection. I agree the price is not competitive. It's per ticket and per person, so baggage protection during a family trip can cost $50 easy.

I've just called to cancel mine, but the Amex travel rep talked me out of it. The reason? They have 3 baggage protection plans, and if you enroll without specifying which one, it sets you for the most expensive one among the 3. In short, you could get almost all the benefits for about half the price.

A small saving, but it adds up.

I think that the Amex baggage protection is a rip-off, unless you tend to travel with expensive items.

First, the airlines are liable (up to a point) for lost luggage. I guarantee that the insurance you buy only kicks in after the federally mandated liability by the airlines is paid. Most airlines pay up to $2500 for lost luggage.

Second, have you checked to see if your homeowners or renters insurance covers such losses? It probably does, at much lower rates.

I know I don't check luggage valued at over $2500. Do you?

I thought it also covered carry ons even though the airlines don't.
