Please be advised that as of May 1st, the Best Value Guarantee benefit will no longer be available on Blue from American ExpressSM. This benefit enabled Blue from American Express Cardmembers to shop for the lowest priced items by refunding the difference* between the item purchased and any covered item**. The program will cease for purchases made with Blue after April 30th, 2002.

This is too bad. It's what made a good card great!

    That sucks.

I used my Blue for all bigger purchases that I might want to revolve ... mainly for that benefit and for fraud protections.

I might as well use my Gold card and - if I want to revolve - bal xfr to a non-Amex product, so they'll lose the possibility of earning any interest income. Dumb move on Amex part.

Jason - where did you see this?

I don't think you can convert a Blue to a Hilton card, but you can convert other cards in the Optima group (Optima, Optima Platinum, and others).

Does anyone know if this change would only apply to Blue or to other Amex credit cards as well, like the Optima Platinum ? I've been putting off purchasing a flat panel monitor for a few months now on my Blue card, but it looks like I better go for it soon before BVG is gone!

    mj,

This is in an e-mail I received this morning from AmEx Blue. It is a dumb move from AmEx.

I called Blue and they said it only applied to Blue, not any other card. So the Charge cards and the Optima lines seem to be okay wrt BVG.

I wonder why they did it. Any thoughts?

I think Amex did it because they are having some financial problems now as are many other large corporations. I don't think they will remove the BVG benefit from the charge cards because they get annual fees from these accounts, but I don't know about the Optima accounts.

Hilton card doesn't have it ... but Starwood does (go figure). I haven't gotten it on email ... but that's a big change. I'd think they should regular mail that.

It takes some of the "luster" off of the card - it's just another 9.9% card in my wallet (albeit, it does earn membership rewards points, but hey, Target 10% coupons are like cash to me!).

Amex earns quite a bit more on the merchant fees... I'm surprised they're doing this. Like I said, it makes it more like "all the other cards".

    Well, it is clear though.
