Anyone know if you could get one of these credit cards with a 614 FICO, no BK's, collections, or chargeoffs, and no late pays for 1 year? Im kind of afraid to apply and I see alot of you on the boards have this card. Thanks for the help!

I was approved and have scores ranging between 680-685 on all three CAs. No judgements, bankruptcys, late payments ever. I know that may not help you, but perhaps it will give you an idea of how low they will go with FICO. I must note though, I had a student account with AMEX that I closed a couple of years ago, which was in good standing, and i noticed they must have looked at that because it now says I have been a member since 1999 (when I originally openned my AMEX student account). I was approved for Amex Blue in Nov 03. Hope this helps.

That definitely helps out alot. I literally get 2 offers a day from them by mail for their credit card. First the AMEX Blue, then the Business Platinum, then just the regular one. When you apply, do they just approve you for whichever one you qualify for? In other words, if I dont qualify for the AMEX Blue would I be able to get any of the other ones?

    Howdy,

To give my two cents: I applied for an AMEX Blue card two years ago, while a college student with credit scores no doubt comparable to, or even lower than, what I currently have (i.e., not so hot). I was approved with a $2000 CL. Judging from that, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Does anyone know which CB they pull? EQ, EX, or TU?

    Usually pull EQF
If you apply for for blue and don't qualify, they won't downsell you to a different product.

Well, I wonder if you could ask them if you were denied for a different type of AMEX card. I applied for Providian today, and im thinking that ill get approved for that, and having an AMEX card should hold me off for the rest of this year. These will be the only 2 credit cards I have besides my store cards. Im gonna give it a shot tomorrow and see how it turns out. If anyone has tried with a FICO under 630 please let me know.

I tried with a 623 EQFX which was the report they pulled and was denied. I do have a collection (2-3 yrs old) however but no lates in at least 18-24 months. 3-4 INQ's

If you have a pre-approved offer for the Blue, I'd use that offer to apply - through the mail or online. I just wouldn't go to their website and apply straight up. From my experience, Amex pre-approvals are legit pre-approvals. They only way you wouldn't get approved is if your credit picture has dramatically changed for the worse since they checked you out.

Blue typically requires 2 accts with 2 years history to get approved. If your store cards cover that requirement, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Are these offers PRE-APPROVED or an INVITATION TO APPLY? Check the wording carefully.

I receive offers all the time from AMEX INVITING me to apply - all mainly business cards. But I DO know that my DW received a PRE-APPROVED notice for an amex gold card - and was instantly approved once we accepted it.

Yes. AMEX preapprovals are the real deal unless things change in your CR as Fazt pointed out.

The invitiation to apply or anything other than preapproved is iffy at best.

After reading the paper, it actually doesnt say anything about a pre-approval or an invitation to apply. I was going to apply just to see what would happen, but after applying for a providian card and being denied, I figure I wont bother with AMEX. Im very surprised about being turned down with Providian. I had an acct with them a few years ago and paid it in full with no late pays. They pulled 2 reports, TU and EXP, and my scores were 617 and 594. Wasnt providian supposed to be a sub-prime type card?

Providian will no longer issue any cards to people with FICO's less than 600. Worse, they now pull 2 bureaus just to make sure you are solidly over 600 and thus your denial.

Are they a subprime issuer? Yes. But for them subprime just moved up a bit.

    Now they're a mid-prime ;)

My EX FICO has been between 692-701 for a couple month or two now. That probably explains why I'm all of a sudden getting 2 offers a week from providian in the mail. 3.9 on BTs with a go to of 18.99%. Do they think I'm on crack?

I got something like this from Chase. Plat preferred or something. It looked good at first, 0% BTs until 8/04, no annual free, pre-approved, minimum 2k limit..

But the go to rate and regular card rate were 19.9%.

It meet the shredder after that.

wow, i'm suprised that providian has such strict standards for "sub-prime". facinating.

If you applied and were approved, you could call CHASE Retention and ask for a better go-to rate.

I was also approved at 18.99%, but asked for re-pricing, and got 0% for 9 months and 8.99% (Prime + 4.99).
