Hi guys, I just applied and was approved for an Amex Blue card. I've never dealt with Amex for a credit card company and was wondering what your thoughts and feelings were on them. Thanks!!
they are not in the best of shape lately... Citibank and MBNA walks all over them in: 1. Customer care nice-factor 2. Customer care adeptness (ability to perform a function without bumbling) 3. Customer care knowledge (Knowing the facts about their products). I'm afraid to say i'm not very satisfied with the company. They have lost their product edge, their APR is not competitive any more, and some of their policies just do not apply to todays "modern" world.
Amex was great before they removed BVG from the Optima cards, including Blue. I'll probably use my Blue card to get MRO points and to carry a balance, if necessary. BTW what rate did you get ?
If you get the Blue 9.99%, you have one of the best products today's market has to offer. I also get many attractive BT offers on my Blue (such as 5.9% till the balance is paid off), as well as MRO points for every purchase. If you were approved for an APR higher than 9.99%, call and ask them to put in a request for Account Services to review your APR. Saar
I guess these folks have their reasons for putting AmEx down. Personally, I have nothing but praise for them. I have had Green for about 2 years, and got Blue a few months ago. Security procedures did tick me off once, LOL, but I got over it. Citi reps have been rude to me - AmEx, never. Haven't dealt with MBNA.
I have an Amex Blue and I love them. They were my first true prime credit card. Customer service is good and Centurion Bank is great with credit increases. I have nothing, but good things to say about them. Dani
I have to say that the AmEx Blue card is my favorite card. I use it for nearly every purchase now. I think customer service is quite nice (though MBNA has everyone beat on that score), and the benefits are great. The online services are nice and - okay, I'll admit it - the Blue card is so COOL looking. I always get looks of awe and respect whenever I use that card. Except at the post office, where the postal worker refused to take the clear card, thinking that it wasn't a real credit card. I was too tired to argue the point...
I've had nothing but good experiences with Amex. They were the first company to trust me with credit, hence, my loyalty to them. I've had a charge card with them for 2 years, never any problems, customer service is always great. When I needed a replacement because my card wouldnt swipe, they sent it Airborne Express, got it the next morning. My only complaint is they're raising the annual fee to $395, but hopefully I can call retention when time comes and get them to reduce/waive it.
sorry I can't offer a different view. Amex Blue is my favorite card. The main reasons: Excellent web site access - payments post promptly - the next day - even before it's deducted from your checking account. Customer service is excellent - for example - I needed a thousand more membership reward points for a travel discount on Continental a few months ago - called amex and asked if i could buy the points - they said yes you can - but there's no need - we'll give you an extra 1000 points free - because you have a good history with us. That was nice. Their membership rewards program - in my opinion - offers more for less points than other reward cards. Over the two years I've had their cards (gold charge, delta skymiles gold and blue) they've never screwed around with rates. They are kind of conservative with cl in the beginning - but they get better the longer you're with them. In short - I really like them and recommend them!
2.5 YEARS NO LIMIT INCREASE... FINALLY AFTER 2.5 YEARS, JUST GOT MY 12.99% DOWN TO 9.99%... NO 5.90% BT LIKE OTHERS HAVE... Other than that...it's ok...
I too, am a huge Amex fan. They really do have superior customer service and bright people working the phones. If you have a legitimate dispute with a merchant they are THE BEST at resolving and issuing temporary credits. In addition, I think they have the best online site-- easy to navigate, informative and payments credit promptly. And I love membership rewards. I like Citibank a lot too, but if I was forced to carry only one card it would be my Amex. The annual fee for Platinum sounds high, but if you travel it is well worth it. Free membership in Hertz Gold, airport clubs, companion tickets when you fly internationally.
Saar, They approved me for 12.99 which of course isn't the best out there, but I'll take it. I still have some marks on my credit report from my college days a few years ago (we won't go into that <g>) so I'm just glad to have been approved. With all the other benefits of Amex Blue, the higher interest rate is worth it, especially since 99.9% of the time I'll be paying it off in full each month. I also have an MBNA plat plus card at 9.99 so any big purchases that I need to carry a balance I'd just charge to this one for now. I think MBNA only lowered it to 9.99 because I've been with them for over 7 years now. I'll try the same with Amex once I've been with them for awhile.
Hi Schweb, Amex is the best of cc. I started out with their Secured Optima 2 yrs ago, I am pleased with all of their products.... Right now I have seven accts with Amex.... Amex Secured Optima Amex LOC Amex Gold Charge Amex Platinum Cash Rebate Amex Gold Delta Skymiles Amex Blue Amex Platinum Starwood Preferred Guest Herman
Have you tried direct mrchants banks's..mastercard they have a card that offer 90 days no interest on all purchase for ever, is not a promotion for 90 days, as long you pay it off in 90days, you dont get charge interst for evrytime you shopp. And if you cannt affort to pay off after 90 dyas, the interst is 15.49 to 18.99.% starting after the 90dys!. My sis has one & make all semi-large purchse on it. Is a great way to still use CC & manage your budget.
Just don't expect American Express or Discover to stand behind you if you happen to be scammed online. Example: last year's CyberRebate.com fiasco. Ok, sure, people should know better, nothing's free, yada, yada, yada. But at the end of the day, American Express with their "world class customer service" was the worst of the worst. Who was best at standing behind consumers unconditionally? Believe it or not... Capital One! Here's a link to an interesting bulletin board which discusses all of that: http://communities.msn.com/Cyberreb.../general.msnw?action=get_threads&all_topics=1 As for me, I like my AmEx Blue okay. But I'm glad I made my CyberRebate purchase with my Capital One card. Cap One made me fill out a few forms and then promptly refunded my money. I never would have expected Cap One to rate so high on the customer service scale, but as far as I'm concerned they top everybody. Doc
Thanks Marci....it's good to hear they have great customer service. I've been an MBNA customer for over 7 years now and can say that they definately have about the best customer service of just about anyone I've ever dealt with. Always helpful and always willing to help. To me, customer service is sometimes more important than getting the "best deal". It's the main reason I stay with my bank, KeyBank, eventhough on some things they aren't the best deal. They, just like MBNA, have bent over backwards for me before and are always very pleasant. Based on 99% of the replies to this thread, I'm looking forward to that same kind of service from Amex!
Actually, Schweb, you're basing your conclusions on 61.5% of the replies to this thread, LOL (8 for, 3 against, and 2 neutral). Sorry, I can't resist a math problem. Psych "Smartass" Doc
I can't say I'd put MBNA or anyone else (except Diners Club) ahead of Amex for customer service. AND for value, for that matter. Between my corporate card, Rewards Plus gold card, and Blue, in a little under 2 years we've got over 200,000 Membership Rewards points. That could be 20 round trip domestic flights - or a cruise - or a whole lot of other stuff. All earned with cards offering 9.9% (Blue) or 8.74% (sign & travel on the gold card). Even with the annual fee for the two gold cards of $150 (includes membership rewards), it's still a great deal. I haven't seen anyone offer that kind of generous reward program with that low of a rate yet. As for customer service - I lost my card in NYC at 8pm on a Thursday, and had the replacement in my hand 9am Friday. Who else has 2000+ offices around the world that you can walk into and get a replacement card in 10 minutes? Any hotel that ever dinged me for a "no-show" or screwed up the bill - Amex resolved it for me. And ... while MBNA certainly is good about having the analyst talk with you about line increases, I prefer having the security of knowing that if my travel agent screws up and double-charges my account for 2 tickets to Europe, I don't have to worry about not getting my card authorized at the hotel when I arrive. No pre-set limit (on the charge card) really does mean something, especially when you travel. Just my $.02 -mj
NOT TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE...BUT I CAN'T SEE HOW ANY CREDIT CARD COMPANY WOULD REFUND ANY OF YOUR MONEY ON THIS SCHEME...(CyberRebate) Pay $500.00 for a $100.00 VCR expecting a $500.00 rebate??? IT DIDN'T ADD UP... It's like a PYRAMID SCHEME!!!
