Amex's new charge cards offer new upgrade options. You can apply for an upgrade using these online forms, but you must already have an Amex charge card to upgrade from.

To upgrade to the new Green with MR, click here:

To upgrade to the new Gold with MR, click here:

I've had a $6,500-limit on my Blue. Applied for a CL increase. They pulled EFX (report was well bumpaged). CL was increased to $15,000.

    Saar,

Did you ask for the specific amount?? I see on their credit increase, they ask what you want your limit raised to.

I did this last month and only asked them to double my limit, from 2K to 4K, they did and pulled equifax.

    Hey Mom,

$15K is what I asked for and $15K is what I got. That's a $8,500 increase. Turns out I could have been more greedy LOL

    Saar,
thanks for the useful info. One additional question - I recently took advantage of Amex's BT offer to get my CL increased by about $8,500. How long will I need to wait before getting the auto CL increases or being able to specifically request an increase? I seem to recall that Amex want to you wait at least three months. Any thoughts?

    Saar,

Thanks for the news! Can you tell us anything more about how these new cards differ? I see mention of the Membership Rewards "Options" account being included with these cards. As I recall, this program is different than the standard MR program. Do you have any insight on this?

Is it beneficial to upgrade from Standard Green/Gold to the "new Gold/Green?

Thanks in advance...just like the awesome tip on the Starwood 10K bonus points some months back....that sure has worked out great!!

You need to wait 6 months between increases. The exception is, you can apply for another Amex card and combine.

    Saar,

I found some odd things online:

    Exceptional shopping and entertainment rewards
With the American Express® Rewards Green Card, you'll be a part of our Membership Rewards OptionsSM program, which automatically turns your purchases into points you can redeem for your choice of shopping, entertainment, and travel rewards -- you'll even earn double points at the places you shop every day, including supermarkets and gas stations.

What's more, you'll have access to our newly enhanced Global Assist Hotline, a Year-End Summary of charges, and much more -- all for an annual fee of $65. Additional Cards are available for $30 each.

The Rewards Green Card makes it easy to manage your finances because it is a charge card rather than a credit card. Youâ??ll have the flexibility of no pre-set spending limit and, at the same time, you know you are always in control with the Card because you pay your bill in full each month.1

Buy the things you need. Get rewarded with things you want.

Earn 1 point for virtually every dollar you spend on Card purchases
Earn 2 points for virtually every dollar you spend at supermarkets, gas stations, home improvement stores, drugstores, the U.S. Postal Service, or to pay your wireless phone bill
Redeem points for rewards from over 50 of the finest names in shopping and entertainment, including DellTM Computer, Callaway® Golf, and The Sharper Image®
Transfer points into 11 frequent flyer programs -- 2 points for 1 airline mile with most programs
Redeem points for travel certificates from 6 of our domestic and international airline partners
    Points have no expiration date
There is no limit to the number of points you can earn

    NEXT, Look at this:

A rich array of travel rewards -- and a fast way to earn them
With the American Express® Preferred Rewards Green Card, you'll be a part of our award-winning Membership Rewards® program, which automatically turns your purchases into points you can redeem for your choice of truly exceptional travel, shopping, and entertainment rewards -- you'll even earn double points at the places you shop every day, including supermarkets and gas stations.

What's more, you'll have access to our newly enhanced Global Assist Hotline, a Year-End Summary of charges, and much more -- all for an annual fee of $110. Additional Cards are available for $30 each.

The Preferred Rewards Green Card makes it easy to manage your finances because it is a charge card rather than a credit card. You'll have the flexibility of no pre-set spending limit and, at the same time, you know you are always in control with the Card because you pay your bill in full each month.1

Redeem points for rewards from 20 airlines, hundreds of hotels worldwide, vacation packages, over 50 cruise itineraries, Disney® vacations, and spa retreats
Transfer points into 11 frequent flyer programs -- 1 point for 1 airline mile with most programs
Redeem points for rewards from over 50 of the finest names in shopping and entertainment, including Banana Republic, Saks Fifth Avenue, COACH®, DellTM Computer, Callaway® Golf, and The Sharper Image®
    Points have no expiration date
There is no limit to the number of points you can earn

Some odd differences for the "almost" SAME card. What are they doing?! 2 MR points per airline mile for $65/year or 1 MR point per airline mile for $110/ year. They must be trying to give as many options as possible. Do you have the upgrade link for the "preferred" versions of the cards?

    Any ideas!?

    As always,

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Saar,

Thanks! It looks like you and I posted the 2nd set of links at the same time! :)

I would suggest, with your indulgence, that anyone interested in ANY of these cards look at the Benefits and Annual Fee differences very closely. The "best deal" here really depends on what you want out of the AMEX Membership Rewards Programs(s).

As usual, you were right at the tip of new news! Let me tell everyone, the "Saar" Starwood news from months back on the 10K bonus was one of the best deals ever. Those points have been and are, sweet. :)

    Thanks,

    Joe

    No problem, Joe :)

As for those inquiring about credit line increases for Amex cards, they are given no more than once in 6 months. The exception is, you can apply for another Amex CC and then combine.

Has anyone done this yet? Is the upgrade a sure thing? Do they pull an inquiry?

Heh heh...that IS the question! I am waiting for someone to call and just ask. ;)

I have done enough digging for today. The Gold Preferred looks like it MIGHT be a sweet deal tho...

Dave - they pull an inquiry.
i have the regular gold charge card and they asked me last month if i want to upgrade to the rewards gold - i told them if it entails a hard inquiry i'd rather not - the rep came back and said that they do pull a hard.

Just called rep, put me on hold and came back saying they would pull a hard for any of these upgrades b/c your current account actually remains open (unless you specifically tell them to close it).

For these "upgrades" a whold new acct and number is set up separate from existing acct. They will use your original "member since" date on new acct, however.

Re: Amex cards - online upgrade for

So let me get this correct since I did not receive any preapproved upgrade offer - I saw the new Green Card in the SF newspaper - er er - well:

    LETS VIEW THIS AMEX PKG:
Implement ususal marketing principle - Set up a new revenue stream to existing cardholders -
by repackaging or finding new uses for its existing mkts -

    EX

    Dogman has a Green Card with MR ($55 + MR $40) / @ $95 yr total.
Dogman has proved himself over many years.
Dogman wants a new card - because he likes the new look? So...

AMEX charges $65-$110 for a new card. YES, you do get double points at gas stations - for a premium of another - YUP $45 - more than I pay now.

AMEX gets to update all applicants with current financial data - valuable for marketing -and the Card reprint didn't cost them too much.

The question is - what is different? Even the wording for the benefits is glossed over from the current cards...

THEN, the customer must apply for the same thing I have now? Its like changing a telephone number - click - and its done.

Nope - not doing it...what will they do when my Card expires in 07/04? Er replace it with the new model...
