hello, I am helping a destitute niece who doesn't even have $20 to her name get rid of a debt to Amex's collection agency which calls themselves Schwartz & Schwartz. With all the penalties and interests, the debt has skyrocketed to $1,359. I spoke with a so-called supervisor offering to negotiate the debt down for pennies on the dollar but the guy was a real jerk. My niece can of course just skip payment completely and there is nothing they could collect from her even if they file suit and get a judgment. But I told her to get some people together, including me, to contribute to pay off the debt for pennies on the dollar. Does anyone know a firm that can help me do this for her or how to go about it and what to expect. My niece is so destitute that she moves from one friend to the next like every 4 or 5 days, etc. But I still want to help. Any ideas please?
Why not contribut to getting her an apartment first. Paying off Amex, in my opinion, does her no good if she is homeless.
