I defaulted on an American Express account about 8 years ago. It has since been purged from my credit files. I have no delinquent or derogatory information reporting.

Is it possible to apply for another American Express card? How long do they maintain records that I previously had an account in default?

They have the memory of an elephant. As long as you have an unpaid account with them, you will not be able to open a new one.

You may, however, be able to get an American Express card from one of the other banks that issues them now, such as BoA.

But jlynn is right--AMEX itself will not give you a card.

all true stuff ! my friend who filed a BK in apx 1998 & included a green personal amex card that had a balance of something like 1500. included in her BK filing tried to get a new amex card but was told NOPE , NO WAY from amex becouse in their mind she still owed the origional 1500. dollars despite filing for & have her BK discharged something like 7 - 9 yrs ago ........ ok now fast forward to 2007 - she got preapproved for an AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD thru HSBC & she just got the card in november w a nice creditline of apx 5000. but her fico score is nearly 700 EVEN THOUGH it still shows a BK on her credit files from the late 90's ....... heck my guess is her fico will be maybe 800 once the BK public record falls off next year ...........

If the bankruptcy is that old, I'm sure it's not affecting her scores by 100 points. In fact, if she's had credit and a good history for 7-9 years, it probably has little impact.
