My brother, who has perfect credit, is considering applying for AMEX Gold and adding me as an AU (I'd be the one really using the card)

What kind of score should he have? Income? He has a job now and is also a full time student. Perfect credit.

And do they run credit checks on AUs?

Or should he simply apply for the green?

What other credit cards does he have? If he has a couple of accounts that are at least a year or two old, he should be fine for both Green and Gold. I think the minimum income requirement for the Green is $15,000 and it should be $20,000 for the Gold card.

He has Discover and Best Buy, and some kind of college Visa

I'm not sure if any of them are a year old. Does that matter? He's a college student and I see they have an option on the application form.

I can tell you that they will put a hard inquiry on your report when he adds you. They don't care how messed up your credit is (as long as you don't owe Am/Ex any money). They just want to make sure that you are a real person w/ a real SSN.

On their web site, it says when you already have an AMEX card...the minimum income is waived...

Look at the income requirements and the benefits. Go to Am/Ex's site and compare the 2 cards. See which one works for you. You need the same credit score of around 650 to qualify for either card. Only difference is the income requirements.
