What are the advantages of having an AMEX green charge card these days. The card costs $55 a year.

I have more than enough credit these days. But I thought I would ask.

For many years I had an AMEX green / gold card and just used it when taking my ex-wife out to dinner or vacationing. I voluntarily got rid of the card about 6 years ago because I did not like the fee and have lived happily without an AMEX card since.

As a side issue, I am very likely to be on the AMEX blacklist as I discharged an Optima card in my BK 3 years ago. However, my credit recovery has exceeded my wildest expectations over the last year. Therefore, an AMEX green card is in my thoughts. After all, it is just a charge card where AMEX decides how much credit to extend month to month. If were to be persuaded to apply I would expect a turndown but I have the "Reconsideration telephone number" that someone put on the board.

Any response / positive or negative / will be appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Jim

    Jim,

AMEX is AMEX....bottom line. I think the benefits of the Gold card are great with Platinum being even better! Well worth the money.

Bottom line is that they probably will not let you have another card unless you pay off what you BK'd on. Was it a lot of money? If not, then pay it and get another card. If it was a lot of money, I would have to let AMEX go.

Jim - $MP is exactly right - if it wasn't much - pay it back. If it was alot - go for Diner's Club.

Amex has many benefits.....as you know....Arf!

Thanks for your responses. You two are among the best writers on this board and also big fans of AMEX.

I forgot to mention that one thing my ex and I liked about the card in the 1980's was that at XMAS - AMEX charges when shopping were instant. Visa and MC often required a wait for approval. Also, the AMEX card is handsome. There is no denying it. I got the green charge card at age 22 - It was a thrill.

Today, I applied for the Green card. I was informed that I will receive a response in 7 10 days. This is bound to be a denial. However, it will be interesting to speak to AMEX for reconsideration. I will make a point of posting what happens. I am not optomistic but once AMEX got on my mind - I had to apply.

Congrats to you two board members on your AMEX accounts and your many credit successes.

    Best wishes,

    Jim.

I have a question that's a bit like Jim's, and I'd appreciate anybody tackling this one:

I was just approved for AmEx Blue. Like Jim, I had an AmEx Green years ago. I left on good terms -- just didn't want to pay the yearly fee anymore. Here's my question: Why would I want AmEx Green if I'm already going to have an AmEx Blue? What can Green do that Blue can't? The AmEx web page that allows card comparisons looks nice, but really just has me confused -- it tells me what I already know. (I already know that Blue allows carrying a balance, and that Green has a yearly fee.)

    Thanks,

    Doc

Blue kicks Green's a$$ in my opinion...one is a debt card and one is a credit card and I am not sure of the effect the 2 have on your report...but as far as convenience and fees, paying in full, for a fee, VS. paying when you can afford to, for free, is a BIG difference no matter what the scoring or approval processors think.

You can ALWAYS pay your BLUE card in full every month if you wish.

I PREFER AN EXACT CREDIT LIMIT...

Green has NO credit limit, but if you always spend <$500 every month and want to spend $7,500 for CHRISTMAS, it may be denied.

I CAN SPEND UP TO $15,500 ON MY BLUE, I may or may not be able to spend that on AMEX GREEN...

PLUS THERE IS THAT PESKY ANNUAL FEE ON AMEX GREEN...

AMEX Blue is very superior to AMEX Green.

I applied for the Green because I believe my chances are "slim to none" of getting any AMEX product - However, I believe that the Green card is much easier to get than the Blue with my background. The $55 annual fee is just a small amount applicable to the cost of my credit restoration effort.

Also, I do not want another line of credit. I have too much credit now as it is.
