Well, I just got off the phone with AMEX because I had them reallocate some of my Costco line to my Blue Cash and low and behold they told me that I was approved for a Platinum Charge card. I currently have had the green charge card for 2 years with a perfect payment history. Now, here's my dilemma. Do you guys and gals think its worth it to upgrade to the Platinum card? The $395/year membership fee is holding me back. To be honest, I dont do a lot of traveling, and it seems that most of the benefits are travel related. The prestige factor would be kinda nice:) What would you all do?

I upgraded last year, and it's worth every penny. I've actually used just about all their services. Annual fee will pay for itself just through the reward alone. I highly recommend it.

I read through the entire benefits list and I'd say 90% is travel related benefits. Could you please let me know what benefits you obtained from your card? Thank you.

LOL George! Looks like your gonna be a Chase account holder again:) You know what I just realized is that the customer service rep was trying to do a hard sell on me. He definitely wanted me to convert asap. I asked him how long the offer is good for and he said only 2 weeks. Weird.

AS FAR AS PRESTIGE WHY IS AMEX PLATINUM "MORE" PRESTIGE WHEN I COULD BUY A MERCEDES WITH MY AMEX DELTA CARD AND MY BANK ONE/UNITED VISA CARD ("IF" THEY WOULD LET ME)...AND GET MILES.

You're right, most of benefits are for those who travel frequently. Few benefits I enjoyed are:

1- I just flew in from LAX via Continental Air. I was able to use their President's Club (free alcohol & snacks) just by showing my boarding pass & the card.
2- They have two tickets for price of one for international travel. Went overseas and saved a bundle.
3- Got enrolled in Hertz Gold for free.
4- Got new wardrobe using reward points.

"IF" you MUST...check out GOLD REWARDS...that should be a better deal for you...

    YMMV

I forgot to mention that when I inquired about gold rewards, the rep said I was not preapproved for that one. LOL! He said I had to apply for that one and that they would do a hard pull. Can someone please let me know AMEX's logic on that one? I am preapproved for their Platinum, but not their Gold, lol! I guess they are hard up for membership fees!

If I traveled a lot, then there would be no question about accepting the card. It sure has nice travel related benefits!

I wouldn´t pay any anual fee for a card. Neither an Amex Charge, Diners, etc. All my cards have no anual fee.

If you have a green card ... and do not really travel or go to shows alot ..it is definitly not worth the $395. Now as far as upgrading to a Gold ...that also might not be worth it for $75. I find it strange that you would be approved for the platinum Card and not the Gold... I would call a customer service rep... I had my green card for less than a month and called and was upgraded right on the phone ...with no new credit check. But the $395 or even $75 is definitly not worth it if you are not going to take advantage of the benefits nad about 80% are for Travel.

I would go for it simply for the "Wow" factor.
